I also love that 300 (both the comic and movie) thought it also important to include the malformed dude character like some sort of conservative metaphor for why it's important for just the normal men to be the ones with the position of doing things. Also, the other greeks just didnt bother doing formation drills at all, so whenevrr they fought, they would just chatge into battle like uh, barbarians. The Spartans would advance at a steadier pace.

Sparta was alone among the Greek cities to actually have formalized training and something approaching a professional command structure (and thus seethed with resentment that they'd missed out at Marathon when the amateur Athenians won despite this). It's not that the others didn't know how to march or hold a phalanx together, but Spartans were the only ones who practiced regularly, a luxury afforded them by their class structure and slave empire in Laconia.

I think the final ratio of helot to Spartan was something like five to one. At the end of the Spartan state, the 300-style shieldwall phalanx was a very small part of the Spartan army. The majority of it was the perioikoi (those who dwell around), who were the middle-class auxiliaries that resulted from Spartans loving the helots. They didn't get the same training and discipline as the full Spartan warriors, thus leading to Sparta's defeat at the hands of the Gay Thebans at Leuctra. After that the helots realized that the Spartan army wasn't all that invincible, and the final series of helot revolts led to Sparta becoming mostly irrelevant for the rest of history.
