IMO the most interesting thing about Sparta was their insistence on maintaining a foundational myth that the city was founded by Heracles and two of his lieutenants, who formed the basis of their bicameral kingship. So mythologically, Spartans were foreign invaders of Laconia, and they maintained that fiction throughout their entire existence. So all of their politics were informed by the idea that they were a settler state, and that the Helots were the natives that could never be part of their superior race.
