Marvel movie scores are completely forgettable for the most part

I mean, strongly disagree. The first couple of Iron Man movies had a kind of generic muscle rock sound to them, but Thor had a fantastic theme that was used well and Captain America was top-notch. Most of the later Marvel films have good themes (Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Iron Man 3, all the Thor movies, Spider-Man: Homecoming, etc.) I can and often do find myself humming any one of them throughout my day.

Sure it's different for everyone I'm sure, but I've seen all the movies twice now and can't remember any of the themes aside from the Avengers one and occasionally Iron Man 3, weirdly.

The incidental music in the Marvel films is very scattershot with regards to quality. Their title themes tend to be good, but moment to moment music suffers a lot.

I mean sure, you can say you remember most of the Marvel scores and even like them. Everyone's allowed to enjoy a fish sandwich at McDonald's and the other simple things in life.

Guardians of the Galaxy is mostly 70's rock staples, I'm not even sure what OST there is to remember.

I wouldn't put almost any Marvel stuff up against prime Elfman, Williams, Shore, Zimmer, or say, any TOS Star Trek movie intro. Not in the same conversation.

Hard to put most film scores against prime Elfman, Williams, Shore or Zimmer though.

But please feel free to post some of the more memorable scores from Marvel movies. I really want to find more that I can change my mind about.

I haven't been a fan of Tyler Bates since he ripped off Elliot Goldenthal and was blatant enough to get sued for it, but his music for the Guardians of the Galaxy movies is the best Marvel stuff outside of Alan Silvestri's Captain America soundtrack.

Like I said, I didn't find anything particularly memorable about the first two Iron Man movies or Incredible Hulk, but from Thor on there's lots to like.

Thanks for posting those but yeah, none of them do much for me. It did make me realize how badly those movies could do with some leitmotifs. Is there a single theme that's consistently used for a character in the solo films? Having different themes for every movie makes for a really inconsistent soundscape.

They’re getting better about it. In Ragnarok they used the theme from Thor 1 at the end, both Avengers used Cap’s theme in a couple places. They also used a version of Strange’s theme in Ragnarok as well.

Also they brought Elfman on board just so he could bridge the two themes, the age of Ultron one and the Avengers one. Its okay. But I like listening to most of the Marvel scores. At least the end credit tracks.

Oh, well, that's all water under the bridge, as I always say. Water under the bridge!

The Incredible Hulk by Craig Armstrong has a criminally underrated OST, especially considering it's pretty much pitch-perfectly structured like something you would hear on a Frankenstein movie.

Already posted about Cap's march, but holy poo poo that one is criminally underused in Cap 2 and 3 . I'm hoping the return of the Avengers theme for Infinity War means it will be back in full force as well

That score might work for the movie but it does not feel appropriate to the book. It’s too upbeat for a story so horribly boring and often gross.

Good movie even if anytime it's brought up someone complains that the book is better for not leaning into American politics.

Given the past few days, seems more like UK politics. The movie and score was definitely stellar though. I've recently been re-watching the Man with No Name trilogy and forgot just how great Ennio Morricone's work is.

Ennio also did the soundtrack for The Thing. That's about the last place I'd expect to see him.

My favourite bit of his music is still Man with a Harmonica, though.

The blood puke scene distracted the gently caress out of me during Hateful Eight because I knew I heard that music before but no idea where until someone said it was from the main menu to The Thing. I used to fall asleep to that movie, so it makes sense why that music bore deep into my brain.

He was the only one who deserved an award for Hateful Eight.

I remember there being talk of a release of Gladiator where you could watch the movie with only the score, no dialogue, no sound effects, just the music. Did that ever happen? I'd imagine it would play like an opera or something.

I actually think legends of the fall's music is rather overblown. It's just not that good a movie and the overbearing music doesn't help. Plus being a James Horner score it still has his obsession with recycling motifs. It just me but I think the hissing scare chord he uses goes better with Zorro than with scalping Germans.

Stare-Out

I might be talking out of my rear end, but I recall one of the Lord of the Rings commentary tracks with Howard Shore was score-only. I should recheck if that's the case. Obviously he talks over it but otherwise it's just the music over picture.

He didn't recycle much in LotF. I mean, his cues, yes, but he didn't pull a Bicentennial Man/Beautiful Mind or Wolfen/Aliens thing in it.

Without the dialogue and with just the "overpowering" score, the movie works really well. it plays like a silent film in that way.

Half of John Powell's scores deserve way better films.

He also tends to respond to or at least acknowledge your responses on social media/Facebook, probably because he doesn't have as large of a fanbase as some other composers.

We're all going to experience changes in our life but only the best of us will qualify for front row seats.

The ending scene from Hancock would lean towards being ridiculous if it didn’t have this piece of music from John Powell accompanying it.

Also, chase music, dude knows his chase music. I could just link to “Bim Bam Smash” from The Bourne Supremacy again, but let’s do something else. Here are two pieces that are somewhat similar (especially if you see the scenes they belong to) yet both manage to deliver.
