The GI Joe movie was pretty wild since it took the soldiers vs terrorists conflict of the series and suddenly add a heaping dose of ancient Lovecraftian civilisations and body horror.

As one of the kids who was literally crying in the theater when Optimus Prime died it was true, but I also loved the movie enough I probably rented it 10 times from the video store after that (and bought a bootleg vhs of it later when it was out of print for years, it was one of my first dvds)

DC's Grimdark Titans.

Robin is like a 20something social worker or attorney and still dresses in the tactilol Drake Robin suit to beat up guys (sticks a birdarang in someone's neck).
Raven in a runaway teen in search of someone to help control THE DARKNESS inside of her
(Rav: My mother used to say there's no such thing as monsters...
Robin: I used to think that... BUT SHE'S WRONG). She has a decent grounded look and then it goes all terrible white skin when HER POWAH emerges (dark power looks like it manifests as screamo yells and some haze)
Starfire has cool curly hair and is a walking CGI effect, and also she may be played by (gasp) a person of color so RiP poor actress' internet account once the misogynist internet finds out.

A) That's sick as hell and no superhero movie has had an action scene that dynamic and coherent
B) That unproduced Watchmen adaptation from yesteryear opened with a super lame version of the same scene. So close that it feels like it had to be an intentional riff.

The G.I-Joe movie is loving amazing. There's a lost ancient city of serpent-men right out of a Robert E. Howard story, Cobra Commander gets devolved into some kind of blue snake gollum thing, and the big rewrite amounts to them adding a line from offscreen "Duke's gonna be okay, everybody!"

How do you blow it so badly when you're basing it off of an action movie template as awesome as the Tomb Raider 2013, like that game absolutely rules on multiple levels.

It's still not as bad as the DOOM movie being over 100 minutes long and spending half of its time being about scientists and marines arguing about genetic mutation though. They even made some really good practical monster suits and animatronic things and stuff for that flick but of course only use them in the movie for a few seconds.

The franchise was already burned all on its own, 10 Cloverfield Lane performed pretty badly and made less money than their lovely 2014 Hercules movie. On the other hand the production budget was only $15 million so it had a really, really low bar to cross so I guess it did okay considering.

They probably did okay on the Netflix deal compared to how much they would have made releasing Cloverfield Paradox to cinemas.

drat. I mean to cut them some slack the classic Titans comics really are that OTT-melodramatic if you want to adapt them faithfully but that Robin bit is so hilariously tone-deaf. "Look! We're on cable now! BLOODSPRAY! BONE CRUNCH! gently caress BATMAN!"

Speaking of video game movies about the origin stories of adventuring grave robbers, are they still doing that Uncharted movie with Tom Holland as young Nathan Drake? I know it will probably have the same problems as the last Tomb Raider movie, where it mainly just feels like its setting up for a franchise rather than just having the hero do hero stuff, but I still kind of hope it happens.

I'm only reminded of this because of that awful pandering fan film with Nathan Fillion that was released recently. It did solidify the idea that I don't want Fillion as Nathan Drake, since seeing him just play a second rate version of his Firefly character probably isn't the most interesting decision. But Tom Holland as a baby Indiana Jones? I could get into that as long as it's not the snore-fest that was the Young Indiana Jones tv series.

It honestly feels like a joke out of Teen Titans Go.

“TITANS! It has been brought to my attention that people don’t like us because we’re too goofy! Look at what other superheroes are doing! Superman’s snapping necks! Batman is throwing cars at people! We need to get DARK! AND VIOLENT!”

As someone who legit loves the classic Titans storylines from 1980-1985, they are way too fixed in a weird moment in time where DC comics was very seriously trying to shake off the silliness of the Silver Age but still attached to it in a bunch of ways. Like Superman was still the goofy Pre-Crisis version who lives in a mansion in the Arctic with a hundred robot replicas of himself, the Golden Age versions of the characters all literally existed in a parallel universe and would meet their younger counterparts for Thanksgiving dinner, etc. It's against this background you have the Titans as DC's attempt to imitate the soap opera dramatics and "realism" that was making X-Men a huge hit at the time----so they all live in a giant building shaped like a letter T, but it's in Manhattan not some made-up city, just like yer Marvel comics! Every original Titan (Raven, Starfire, Cyborg----technically 'Beast Boy' was around beforehand but they renamed him 'Changeling' and p. much made him a new character) has a novel-length backstory stuffed with as much tragedy as possible: family wiped out, sold into slavery, daughter of Dimension X Satan---just really laid on thick to show you these aren't yer dad's comics!---but they're still comics of their era stuffed full of corny narration, long thought-bubble soliloquys, and corny one-liners. I love them but they could really only have ever existed at that particular moment in time and even if half the characters (Wally West, Deathstroke, Cyborg etc) weren't long since poached for other properties/series you could never really do a faithful translation of them today.

I don’t think the problem is The Rock, I think it’s that the film had no hook. Other than the cast there nothing to differentiate it from a made-for-tv TNT presentation starring Dean Cain.
