Eh, gay to mean bad is a more recent trend (that is declining, thank the gods) due to the AIDS epidemic and the increased attention for gay rights. Gay, and human being and all the other ones, became a lovely shibboleth to prove how straight you were; most outgrow it but freep-types don’t. But before the 80’s—and some cracking before from Stonewall et al and loosening sexual mores—heterosexuality was so pervasive that that lovely shibboleth was less necessary.
