Middleman to a middleman to a middleman is loving with my cashflow and expecting me to just take it. Why can I not let these things go and just ignore them? Why do I have to fight on principle despite it achieving nothing?

I need to enroll the people making decisions at this company in a formal logic course. It's either that or going postal. This loving project has been in limbo for weeks. I was given a spreadsheet diagramming expected behavior. For each numbered case, there was a "logic" column that presented logical statements like "If they purchased a previous kit or scan product". Then there was a column of product codes to display in the filtered list (the whole project is building this filtering service to restrict the products that can be selected for the customer). I discovered that this spreadsheet made no sense. Some of the cases were redundant; case 8 was the exact same as 6, but it added "and they previously purchased a kit or scan"....but if any of the other poo poo was true, this was true by default (they can't be in the case status being checked for if they never had one of these products). But there was also some overlap....the case just asking if they purchased a kit or scan would always be true for most of the other cases, and the product list was then appended to those. Then QA was unable to cope with this and refused to test things unless that spreadsheet was revised to PRECISELY spell out the exact behavior. But the infuriating part.....they said go ahead and remove the redundant cases that add literally nothing. Fine. But then they just go "oh and if ___, just remove these product codes". You can't be that anal about the spreadsheet and testing and then just say "just do this". In my experience, any time a non-programmer opens with "can't you just....", what follows is always a simple statement that is loving impossible to implement in code. There's a reason the requirements are supposed to be stated as positive requirements. These scenarios should always be "if ____ is true, do this". The way I have this coded, I have a class method for each scenario that makes the checks and appends the products if they're met (if there's product overlap, I flatten the list later and remove duplicates). It's just infuriating when they delay this poo poo for weeks, making me look bad because this 8-pointer keeps rolling over sprint to sprint, being needlessly pedantic about testing (it's not that loving hard to just see that your test case can satisfy more than one scenario), and yet now they just throw that out the window with a "can't you just...." impossible request I just kicked it back to them with "you need to present this request like the rest of the acceptance criteria and revise these scenarios; I can't "just" remove products, you need to be precise about when these products SHOULD be shown, not when they shouldn't". I just want this to be over.

poo poo pissing me off: After nearly a year of fending off poachers I've lost my extra cubicle/workbench Something not pissing me off: One of my coworkers is leaving in a month and I will get his office. Something else pissing me off: I may not be able to keep the office for very long, since we will be doing a remodel this fall and that office may not survive the process.

Collateral Damage posted:Some PC servers have "hot"-swap RAM as well. You need to take the module offline first, which causes the memory controller to redistribute the content to the other modules, then you can swap it out and put it back online. There are also some that support mirrored RAM configurations where the same data is stored in two sticks (meaning you effectively have half the available RAM) and the loss of a module theoretically doesn't cause any data loss. I've seen this on a lot of midrange and up servers, though never with actual hot swap support. I'd have to assume that any boards supporting "hot" swap of the modules also supports a mirrored mode. Of course in reality just like with a RAID system it's always better to properly offline the component being replaced through the OS because there can still be unexpected hiccups if you just yank the hardware out.

It's amazing how often people use "the system should handle it" as an excuse/shortcut for doing things properly. The drive that's blinking red is the bad one, let's just yank and replace, why go into the raid manager? Restarting Windows shuts down the SQL service, why would we shutdown the service first before we initiate a restart? We have multipathing on this VMWare host, why should we put it in maintenance mode before re-cabling one path? "Mechanical sympathy" is a thing in the IT world and you should never lean on disaster level protections to do routine maintenance.

I agree with your other examples, but why is this an issue? A soft reboot/shutdown should gracefully shutdown any services. And while I have seen exceptions to this, it's usually lovely LOB applications not something ubiquitous like SQL Server.

The Fool posted:I agree with your other examples, but why is this an issue? The timeout is shorter. If you have a larger SQL instance, it may take longer to shutdown and unmount the DBs than the OS will wait for during a restart process. Windows won't wait forever for a service to stop on its own and may consider it hung and terminate when you really just have to wait longer.

And like a previous poster said, the people making the decisions rarely are sitting in the open office. Funny how that works.

Makes so much more sense now on some past experiences. Expecting a windows system to properly shut down a windows service isn't unreasonable though. I am still going to remove a blinking red drive though because gently caress the world.

Office design chat: My dad worked for DoI for a good 40 years (not IT, he used computers for decades writing and editing regulations and still types with two fingers). When they moved buildings, they ran out of space for his cube, but had an empty office. He did not rate an office, so they put a cube inside the office, effectively blocking the window. I swear to God this is true. Zil posted:I always loved working 4x10s when it was offered, especially when overnight. It's fan-loving-tastic. I berated a project manager for 10 minutes on a call today and just snapped when he said "maybe you just overcommitted hmmm" when we got voluntold to work on this with no extra staffing. I'm so embarrassed and pissed off at myself. This project is becoming such a clusterfuck and so many people are getting added in because everyone wants to be a part of it that it's falling apart because of to many hands in the jar. Good news is we're just about done setting up the Production Infrastructure so we can pull back some...but I think we have to teach all these new devs how our pipelines and culture work....
