This lesson has already been learned. Some animal rights group starting buying up chinese dogs that were meant for dog meat and rescuing them. All it did was make the dog meat folks in the area intentionally start bringing way more tortured dogs since the animal rights group was essentially a new bulk purchaser.

If you want to set them free don't buy them. Steal them instead, that's a loss to the operation.

Even more depressingly this happens with slavery

Socialism has many definitions, but some socialists (e.g. richard wolff) will define capitalism and their vision of socialism in the following way:

If you have a tiny group of people unilaterally telling everyone else what to do and how to distribute the revenue in a wage labor system, that's capitalism.

If you have the workers democratically deciding what to do at their workplace, that's socialism.

Some critics call china and soviet russia "state capitalism". China and Soviet Russia of course did have a large mix between private and public workplaces and it wasn't ever entirely one or the other.

Edit: Also I don't mean to derail the thread. Just a lot of people will look at china and go :wtc: wondering what does communism or socialism or capitalism even mean, and it's nice to have different perspectives.

Also remember that large parts of China are 100% fine with killing millions of sharks for their fins to make soup.

No, they don't use the whole shark, they slice the fin off and toss them in the water to die.

I believe NBA star Yao Ming started a campaign to stop this practice. Allegedly a lot of people didn't know the sharks were killed in this process. Last I read it didn't really cause the practice to lose any steam.

This headline is poorly written for a journalist.
After a successful campaign to raise awareness about the dangerous of shark fin soup, Yao Ming is now working to fight poaching.

Anyways, what’s so special about just the fin? Doesn’t it all taste like shark?

It literally doesn't taste like anything. It just turns into goop and the only reason it's in demand is conspicuous consumption.

Yeah pretty much, that's why I say thanks Mao. "Chinese medicine" wasn't really anything other than an amalgamation of old wives tales etc. It's like basically what if you codified all the insane homeopathy, anti-vaxxer, raw milk, Jenny McCarthy types' views and called that "Traditional American Medicine."

Then of course he kept on using Western medicine/doctors for himself because he knew full well "traditional Chinese medicine" is a load of horseshit.

Anyway an article if you are interested: http://www.slate.com/articles/healt..._t_believe.html

quote:

Mao understood he needed to deal with criticisms like those of Lu Xun, Wang Qingren, and Wang Chong in order for Chinese medicine to be taken seriously, both domestically and internationally. His solution was a two-pronged approach. First, inconsistent texts and idiosyncratic practices had to be standardized. Textbooks were written that portrayed Chinese medicine as a theoretical and practical whole, and they were taught in newly founded academies of so-called “traditional Chinese medicine,” a term that first appeared in English, not Chinese. Needless to say, the academies were anything but traditional, striving valiantly to “scientify” the teachings of classics that often contradicted one another and themselves. Terms such as “holism” (zhengtiguan) and “preventative care” (yufangxing) were used to provide the new system with appealing foundational principles, principles that are now standard fare in arguments about the benefits of alternative medicine.

The second part of Mao’s project was to provide Westerners with sensational evidence of Chinese medicine’s efficacy, particularly of acupuncture analgesia. The watershed moment was in 1971, when New York Times editor James Reston wrote an article entitled “Now, Let Me Tell You About My Appendectomy in Peking.” In it, he recounted how Wu Weiran of the Anti-Imperialist Hospital had administered “a standard injection of Xylocain and Bensocain” before removing his appendix. Later, while Reston recovered, acupuncture was used to relieve pain from post-operative gas. Eager to believe in mystical Eastern miracle workers, credulous Westerners misreported the story, claiming that acupuncture had been used as an anesthetic during Reston’s appendectomy, a falsehood that still has currency. Fascination with acupuncture exploded, allowing the Chinese Communist Party to put together a media blitz touting its extraordinary powers, complete with what appear to have been intentionally faked surgeries.

Mao’s vision still reigns supreme, and the present state of misinformation about Chinese medicine is staggering, even in what appear to be trustworthy sources. Cancer.gov, for instance, states that “the oldest medical book known, written in China 4,000 years ago, describes the use of acupuncture to treat medical problems.” In fact, the oldest excavated Chinese medical text is no more than 2,300 years old and makes no mention of acupuncture at all—though it does include numerous exorcistic cures, a common element in ancient Chinese medicine that the popularizers of traditional Chinese medicine did well to forget. (Unfortunately, they did not forget about extracting bile from live bears, a practice easily justified by postulating the presence of qi, or life force, in living animals.)

The company said bear bile is now used in 123 traditional Chinese medicines, and 183 pharmaceutical companies use bear bile powder in medicines.

Y'all want some chicken horror look up "vent pecking" some time. Apparently captive chickens will frequently get it in their heads that it's a good idea to peck at the other chickens' throbbing cloacas right after an egg is laid, to the point where they sometimes peck their guts out through their rear end and then cannibalize them. Weirdly free-range chickens do it more than caged ones, so enjoy that mental image the next time you buy free-range grass-fed eggs at whole foods, yuppies
