I was just thinking about it, but one of the complaints about The Simpsons is that they don't really utilitize Marge very well. She mostly just groans disapprovingly at Homer's antics. King of the Hill doesn't have that problem with Peggy. She's so well utilized and rounded as a character. If anything, it's Hank's role to be the wet blanket in the dynamic.

But if you stop to think about it he's just as nuts as everyone else-- he just has a thing for acting what he considers normal.

I always thought KOTH owed a lot to The Andy Griffith Show: basically just replace Barney with Peggy and Aunt Bea with Luanne. Griffith himself said that he realized in the second season he was "the town straight-man, surrounded by kooks".

One of the first things she says after she’s hospitalized is “I am one of only sixteen people to survive falling out of a plane. Now, I’ll need to double check that when I get home...” Prior to that, her biggest show of irrational pride was when she got indignant that the soccer moms didn’t laugh at her “spot on” Fat Albert impression. A parachute malfunction Fearless-ed a bad substitute Spanish teacher into the roaring ego monster we know and love and hate for the rest of the series.
