An unpopular opinion is something like 'black licorice is good'. This is ignorance. Gutting quality public education to the point of committing superpower suicide is bwm.

It's not just jobs. People often move as their families age, first to larger homes then to smaller. If you end up with a lot of old people who don't want to move it impacts the demographics of the area. Our local elementary school is half the size it was when my kids went there because everyone's aged out. When those kids graduate high school we will probably see a big chunk move and younger families will replace them and the cycle will continue. Unless something like favorable property tax rates and restrictive development ordinances distort that (see California).

My favorite story of this was the Incas, who revered their royal family so much that even in death you owned your property and no one could live there, so they started running out of room for new people.

You do realize that it's possible to afford to contribute to a retirement account and then get into a situation where you can't afford food, right? Like people get laid off or their spouse dies and they have kids to feed. You expect them to drain their retirement accounts, take massive hits due to penalities and taxes, just so they can get food?

Most retirement accounts are exempt in bankruptcy. If we don't expect people to liquidate their retirement accounts to satisfy creditors, why should they liquidate them to satisfy a basic need?

My girlfriend currently works as a nurse's aid making 11.50$ an hour, 30 hours a week. We have $3000 to our name, a 2012 reliable honda civic and a 2004 "beater" honda civic. We have about 2 months left at our current apartment, and we did have plans to move across country away from family but unsure about that route anymore. We think it may be best to stay close to family during this time. It is important to also note my student loan payments will begin in December which i would say are roughly 1000$ a month.

I have roughly a credit score of 750, with a 3,500$ discover card. She has a credit score of 580 with a $250 victoria secret credit card. She is interested in attending a 500-hour program for holistic medicine and herbalism for roughly 3,700$. However the school is across country away from family. I have approximately 1 year of bartending experience and have working in restaurants for about 5 years. She also has around 5 years of resturant experience. I mention this because we both made more money working in restaurants but were unhappy and needed change. I need to know how i can best make us finicaially stable so we can raise a child without concerns about our finances.

My mother in law has a 2006 Civic that's had tons of repair and maintenance dollars spent on it, and it's still a huge piece of poo poo. No car lasts forever, and hers has 260k miles on it. Mid 2000s is old enough that the interior is falling apart on just about anything though. Headliner falling down, pretty much everything in the suspension replaced, whole cooling system, A/C work. Is it worth $1500/year in repairs for a $2k car? You tell me.

Yep completely agree, this bullshit can be insanely good with money. But does it require certification? You can probably start your own "clinic". Lots of crack pop naturopaths do it and they "prescribe" vitamins. It still boggles my mind that a naturopathy is a thing. Most of their money comes from selling over priced vitamins (literally, even the patients know they're vitamins) which can only be sourced from specialilty companies that sell to naturopaths. Two symbotic parasites successfully feeding off people looking for help.

Medicaid isn't means tested anymore, ACA did away with that. SSI excludes retirement accounts (pensions, 401ks, IRA), and the other things mentioned are done at the state level so they can just change that. So anyone losing out on benefits due to these state law changes would be because the state wants to bump them off.

Edit: Actually looking at the very source linked in the article, TANF is the only subsidy that could be lost with the states currently enacting it. And that's only for like 3 of them. What a stupid article.

Medicaid is still means tested. For states that accepted Medicaid expansion they just upped the income limits. There are also asset exclusions as well.

Also SSI only excludes defined benefit plans from calculations until the benefit starts to be drawn. For defined contribution plans they count as an asset and if they exceed the asset limits they would exclude the person from SSI.

You're not joking. My wife went to a semi-quack / quack who managed to be half-right in her case and after things went south (doctor yelled at her to get out of her office when my wife felt overwhelmed) it was impossible to get the supplements that actually had somehow been working. After a few missteps we managed to find something that works as well, but it's seriously disgusting. You can't even buy the specialty stuff except for from one of the clinics, and you can't buy from the clinics unless you're a patient.

fortunately small frontal overlap crashes with non-deformable objects at the speeds IIHS tests are not terribly common so i wouldn't go out there and spend money i didn't have on a new car to get better small overlap performance

also unfortunately a few unnamed OEMs changed their cars to pass the test rather than to actually increase the car's survivability for all passengers in small overlap crashes (lol we only reinforced poo poo on the drivers side hehe)
