well to be fair you never know with apple. it's either. "oh hey we didn't do as much work QAing this as we thought and here's a software fix that we made" or, "this keyboard is quieter" 2 revisions later.

so if you don't get mad enough about it apple takes their sweet time and asks you to file a class action lawsuit before they'll address it.

The worst thing about Aliens Colonial Marines is Randy Pitchford essentially lied to Sega about the progress of the game, then siphoned off money they got from Sega to fund Borderlands 2, and subsequently Sega had to cancel an Aliens RPG from Obsidian because of the poor sales of Aliens Colonial Marines.

So gently caress Randy Pitchford.

I'm shopping for dongles and I'm not sure if I should get one multidongle or multiple dongles. The connectors I need are HDMI and USB-A (at most only 2). VGA (be it VGA to HDMI or VGA to USB-C) would be useful to have since old projectors still exist but I can cross that bridge when I need it. I don't care about Ethernet or SD Cards. I keep seeing something about USB-C passthrough charging but unless I need that to charge my iPhone/iPad then I don't care for it either.

Is there any reason why I shouldn't just get this Anker USB-C to HDMI and two of these Anker USB-C to USB-A dongles instead of one of those $50+ all-in-one dongles with ports I don't need (and reportedly according to the Wirecutter reviews they heat up to like 100+ degrees?).

e: Is it just me or does the Touch Bar look really blurry/like poo poo next to the nice screen? I notice it every time I glance down. The text are blurry and the icons aren't sharp. The worse offender is Safari, which for some reason tries to render the websites in the Touch Bar but the result is just a blurry mess of white boxes.

The Ankers work good. I have both and never had a problem with either, but the only one I really use is the HDMI adapter. The only other things I use are either flash drives or USB SSD. My T5 SSD is a USB C device and for the rare time I need to use flash drive, I use a USB-C one.

USB-C Passthrough is to connect your power supply so you can use the hub and power your rMBP at the same time. It’s really less of a concern with the touchbar rMBP and more a feature with the rMB it non-touchbar rMBP.

Not really (except for the “thumbnail safari tabs” which is weird). Obv: did you peel the protective film off? (So satisfying). Personally I’ve found the thing is a fingerprint magnet, so I clean it clean pretty often.

There's a protective film on this thing? That could explain why it looks "blurry" then. I'm looking at it right now though and I can't find any edges to peel from.

The caveat here is that the passthrough-capable hubs I've seen will take the 85W coming in, keep 15W for themselves, and pass 60W max to the laptop.

At least for my use pattern, it's not enough to keep the battery charged as I work.

Use Safari as your browser, it always gets preferential treatment from Apple and generally runs the best. At this point Apple does a really good job of keeping it competitive with good third party browsers in terms of features and it has great popup and tracking blockers built in. Avoid Chrome if you can as it’s still kind of a resource hog and tends to slow things down and make the computer run hot. Otherwise, get whatever you want to run I guess. Most stuff out there that you probably want won’t be on the App Store (same as with the official Windows App Store) but probably exists for Mac OS unless it’s a game. But you didn’t buy a Mac for gaming right? (Steam has a version for Mac and there are actually a fair number of great games on it with Mac versions if you want, so does Fortnite, and if you really want- Nvidia’s beta streaming service is still free for Mac users).

Yeah. For me (2016 15”) it was related to the computer changing temperature quickly (like using Premiere for 20 minutes in a cold room). Apple didn’t really acknowledge the problem but did end up replacing something (my display? display assembly?) under warranty and the problem went away.

Chrome, Edge and Firefox share their data across all their different OS versions including iOS/Android. As soon as Firefox can get Containers to work across different devices I'll probably switch over to that over Chrome.

That'd be great but they'd have to run out of stock parts for the 2016/2017 first.

I was half-joking and don't set out to game AppleCare. I only got a new model last time because I didn't have time to be without a laptop again and was exasperated at sending it out over and over.

In theory if you wanted a new unit, then yeah you should probably be opening as many legit repairs as possible, but I don't know what Apple's criteria is for replacement units.

I'm honestly happy with this laptop. I have these issues but I don't know if I can recreate them on the spot because they are intermittent. Just don't want my mbp to turn into dust right when the Apple Care runs out.

The smart thing to do is to sell it before Apple Care runs out, no? I end up holding on to my poo poo forever because of sentimental attachment. Hoarder
