The slur comes from the syllable; Korea is “Daehan Mingook” in Korean and so the last part became the slur. I think it’s a cognate with the Chinese 國 but I’m not a linguist.

it's american exceptionalism, most people just don't seem to realize that works both ways in that both "city on a hill" rhetoric and "america is literally the worst thing to happen to the world ever" are both examples of it and american culture and ideology is so prevalent in the world of the 21st century that other countries have adopted the notion as well, usually for the purposes of deflection
