Ditch the pineapple for coconut, and totally would.

Ditch the apple and the pineapple and then we're talking maybe, but otherwise get the gently caress out.

That said, no birthday was complete growing up without our weird NZ version of ambrosia which was equal parts yoghurt and whipped cream, and then marshmallows. Sometimes it had berries or white choc chips in it too if you were getting fancy.

Not gonna lie, I actually kind of want to eat a bunch of lovely fried food out of a little ferris wheel now. I'll have to do a trip report if I ever end up on that side of town.

I mean gently caress, just look at this stupid thing.

My mom's version had canned pineapple, mandarin orange segments, mini marshmallows, and shredded coconut in some sort of whipped cream/sour cream mixture, but as I recall she usually only made it for holidays. She also made some drat good jell-o cranberry sauce that had finely diced, fresh cranberries, apples, and walnuts in it. I kinda want both now but I know nobody else would eat it if I made it. :saddowns:

..Maybe I'm just hungry and craving weird things.

Japanese Camembert is not good cheese, trust me. Waxy hockey puck. (Yes, I'll still eat it.)

I'm choosing to believe that a restaurant has doubled down on the family-style hotpot concept by embedding an internally-lit fryer into the dining table so the family can ferris-wheel all the baskets in and out of the oil and a precocious 5-year-old can reach across and pick out bits

Tile schmile, that doesn't look like anti food porn to me. It looks delicious, though I can't tell what kind of what I'm guessing is fish that is. Beets are awesome (roasted, pickled, hell even boiled beets can be saved), and I somehow doubt they're burned. It looks like a phone pic to me, so it's possible it's that.

e: I would totally eat roasted beets for breakfast. I think almost any root vegetable could take the place of potatoes for occasional variety. Not there is anything wrong with potatoes.

I've been to a restaurant in Japan with a deep fryer set into every table. You go up to a buffet and pick out skewers of breaded meat, veg, seafood, etc. and then bring it back to your table and fry it yourself.

I did not see any children in the place so I'm not sure if they're banned or not. In the US the whole place would be a lawsuit wellspring but it's Japan so who knows.

I'm in Ireland, so I don't know how helpful this will be, but here Aldi is actually a bit fancy whereas Lidl is more basic. The Lidl bakery is great though. Lidl's regional food specials can be quite peculiar since they tend to be a bit german even when they are supposed to be Asian, or American or whatever.

Hence indian-style, german made tuna rolls, with a little pagoda on the tin for a little extra confusion (or is it a Japanese temple gate???)

spankmeister

It really depends on where you are if Lidl or Aldi is more basic or fancier in my experience.
In rural south of Spain Lidl is one of the fanciest supermarkets around for example. And in The Netherlands it's a bit of a toss up but Lidl definitely has a wider selection and of course the bakery which is actually quite decent.

They added a lidl near me in central NC. It is a bit like aldi without the charm, with a weird almost brutalist aesthetic. Prices were so-so with a lot of items marked as being on sale with 20 cent discounts. I found it unpleasant and haven't been back.

Kids are definitely welcome, although mine spent most of his visit dipping skewers of cake and marshmallows into the chocolate fountain at the buffet. I know okonomiyaki/teppanyaki places try to seat you at a table without a hotplate if you're with small children, but once they're maybe five, it's fair game.

Oh yeah, my limit is usually two. But in all seriousness, $12 seems about right for a gimmick like that. People on Yelp were complaining that everything is super expensive for a boba tea place, but honestly it's not that bad, considering where in the world we live. I would expect to pay at least twice as much for that if it was literally anywhere except a boba tea cafe.
