Lessons learned on legendary XCOM to take on for your own games: Take the motherfucking high ground. That accuracy boost will make or break an engagement. Know the behavior tree of your enemy. For example, when engaging sectoids I kill a nearby advent trooper. This is because unless the sectoid can flank a soldier, it will do summa that psychic poo poo. Either zombie or mind control attempt. Either is a turn of you not dying. Obviously the next turn that fucker must die or the mission will go south quick. ADVENT officers die before anyone else because they are accurate, can boost accuracy for others, and will grenade groups. They are the most dangerous early game enemy. And Lancers will run across the map to loving kill you with the melee attack unless flashbanged. Flashbangs: always carry one to break mind control or to disable special abilities of units. It's also a easy way to deal with the psi zombie if you cant kill the sectoid that turn. Don't go balls out to flank unless its a guaranteed kill and you are certain to avoid triggering more enemies. Grenades are your friend: use them to soften groups and to ensure single targets have no cover or are killed. The first month sets the tone for the rest of the game. Build GTS immediately. Get a Sergeant up and groom your faction soldier to be that guy from gatecrasher on. Ideally you'll have a sergeant before the first retaliation mission so you can have squad size 1 upgrade. 5 guys are much better than 4 when dealing with the chosen for the first time. Otherwise its razor thin margins. Gtfo if you are losing people on mission. Having guys out of action for months or dead isn't worth completing that mission. In the first month especially, you can afford maybe one casualty per mission, and thats really only towards the end of the mission. Like if someone buys it on the 2nd to last or last pod of the mission so loving be it. But at the start? Be loving cautious. Grenadiers, Rangers, Reapers: Thats the holy trinity for general work. 2 Grenadiers, at least one ranger, and a reaper scout will allow you to detect and delete pods, or at least cut them down to one ayy lmao. Sharpshooters: They are insanely good for killing lost if you luck out and get the reaper resistance order "Between the eyes". Any damage will kill a lost if thats the case. There's a reason dick hurtz had 41 kills in one mission: he was on a fire escape deleting entire swarms of lost. Specialists: Don't bother with a medic until you got plated armor and exo suits. Your guys either will live or die that early. Train up one or two but use grenades on them. Combat specced guys are great for turrets and MECs, as well as securing a kill if your short a few HP. The lost: gently caress what the game tells you, use grenades against ADVENT. It's better to deal with a lost swarm then ADVENT guys who will kill your dudes. Once ADVENT is dealt with, either move to or already be set up on high ground if you can, ideally a staircase where you have all your guys blocking off the ladder so they can't climb up. Prioritize dashers above all else, they move 20 and will wound your guys consistently. Ignore other lost unless they are within 8 squares of you. First lost mission: unless its the one where you can pick up resistance operatives around the map, do not worry about the secondary objective. gently caress that escort, you're gonna get dudes hurt trying to extract him and you're guys will be out for weeks...just when you need them most. If it is that other one, clear ADVENT near the VIP and first resistance op. Travel via high ground to the 2nd dude then gtfo. Exo Suits: I highly recommend them instead of waiting on plated armor. Phase that poo poo in ASAP so you can use rocket launchers to reach out and touch people, as well as having added survivability. I took shitloads of casualties because XCOM guys couldnt take a hit after a certain point. They also definitely couldnt survive an encounter with the Chosen. Build order: GTS, Ring, Proving Grounds, Power Relay, Infirmary, else. No workshops. If more stuff comes to me I'll let you know but thats my main takeaway.
