What game are you having to accept a Eula on in VR? All my legal button clicking was done in 2D, and then any buttons in-game had a method to be clicked in VR

Also did you set your steamvr up as standing only? That might affect it

I think you talked about this earlier in the thread but if you have the time, please let us know how good the GTAVR mod actually is. I'd love to try it out but GTA5 is a big download for something that might not be too good. Is the mod standalone or does it require Vorpx, and does it actually feel good to drive/look around/shoot or is it jank city? I know some jank is to be expected.

So my bro and I were having a (pointless) debate about what's so difficult/expensive about creating next gen VR - i.e. consumer HMDs with high FOV which are as lightweight/neatly packaged as Rift etc.

My impression was that lenses are a big part of why VR tech is difficult and that Oculus/Valve have spent a lot of time & money on R&D to make lightweight lenses that can do the job for VR without introducing tons of distortion and chromatic aberration. However he rightly pointed out that, for example, Pimax seems to have come up with decent lenses and that's with limited funding. Obviously Pimax is creating a very wide HMD to accommodate their wide FOV experience so it's not like they've had to come up with lenses that could give wide FOV in a Rift-like form factor, but still.

Anyway does anyone know or have any articles about lens tech for VR, what the problems are and how near we might be to solving them for the proper gen 2 HMDs (assuming gen 2 will be wide FOV but similar form factor to Rift/Vive CV1s)?

It's not lens tech. Lenses have hundreds of years of iteration and research behind them and are well understood. It's developing display technology small and light enough to be worn on the head and presented to the viewer a couple inches from the eyes with the highest possible DPI(dots per inch).

Just got both my Monoculi

They host the official drivers on Mega.nz, lol

Plus the download was kinda messed up, I had to retry it ten times to get the file. I re-uploaded it to WeTransfer: https://we.tl/H7eAYfOUUj

Windows SmartScreen tried to block me from running it because it is an unknown publisher, but I ran virus scans on it and it came out clean.

After you install it, reboot and it'll have an icon at the bottom-right of the screen. Click that and check for updates, it will have a new update.

Yeah it took me a while to get it working. My screen kept flashing but figured out it was from a bad HDMI extender. Luckily I had a female to female HDMI adapter so used that and it fixed that issue.

Only issue I have not is that if I try and watch a movie I have a horizontal green line in the middle of the screen.

I'm surprised this thing works at all though given how low end my PC is. I can play elite and whatnot, though I would still like to upgrade so I can run it at a higher setting and not have terrible lag when looking around.

Also, image seems pretty blurry on the outer edge of the screen though that could be my lovely vision causing that. It also pushes against my nose pretty hard so I need to figure out the adjustment on that.

Good lord this is janky/pukey.

With Revive, all the games do this weird thing where they launch into a "window" in VR that covers most of your view, but if you turn your head you see it's just a floating box in a black void. You don't actually have a 360 view and can't look behind you.

Games launched directly from SteamVR have propert 360-degree turning, however:

a) there seems to be some lag when I turn my head

b) there is some very pronounced image persistence (blurring streaking) from the display being non-OLED. But it is much more pronounced than other IPS screens like the Dell headset.

c) the headset doesn't seem to be warping the environment properly to account for the lens distortion. If there's a straight horizontal line, and I turn my head up or down, if very obviously bends to the lens curvature and warps a lot.

d) sweet spot is as poor as any WMD headset

e) probably the worst offense, the focal distance seems to be set really, really close

Harminoff posted:

I will say, the $80 dual lens one is way more comfortable than the $50 version. The HMD itself is about 25% smaller/lighter. The dual lens uses a head strap that is basically a clone of the Oculus with the triangular back. The foam face pad has a much lighter density of foam than the $50 version, so it is much more comfortable. Both versions have the face foam stuck to the plastic with adhesive, so I carefully peeled the part holding my nostrils shut, and moved them higher in the HMD so they rest on the bridge of my nose.

The $80 version is actually quite comfortable to wear, however I am as sick as a dog from the visuals and need to take a break.

That line you guys are seeing is the steamvr chaperone. That’s where steam thinks you’ll hit a wall. It can be turned off on the steamvr options. It shows up in the middle of the screen because the HMD isn’t 6dof and steamvr puts you at floor level by default

It switched to wvr2 automatically, quiet at 100%. I switched to realtek and it's fine. Another issue, it looks like I'm viewing everything through a large circle, because I can see the outline of the lenses I guess. I assume that's why you want adjustable lenses.

Use the ones rated for the right weight and its fine. Those Command strips have lb weight ratings printed on them. The stand + sensor is under 1 lb. So long as it sticks and your paint isnt lovely and peels, it should be fine assuming they are not generic low end crappy strips.

Do not do this! The stands are unnecessarily heavy and the sensors will stick really far out from the wall and they cannot angle "up" enough to give good coverage unless they're really, really high (they should be mounted about 1ft above head height and angled at your waist when you are standing in the center for best results)

1. I had the same issue with my Oculus, the issue is just that the pin that connect the right headphones to the hmd get dirty/disconnected. I don't think it's an indication of anything, and even so Oculus seems pretty good about helping people even outside of warrenty. They also have replacements (at least ear buds), so in the absolute worst case you should still be fine.

2. TheBlu is very short, many people like it as an intro to VR since all you have to do is stand, personally I'd suggest against spending $10 if that's the price. If you really want to try it out I might suggest the Viveport subscription, it's got a 14 day free trial and gives you 5 games at a time. It's something like $9 a month, but you do get to try 5 different games every month if you want. I've hardly used my sub (I got it on super discount) but it was great for trying things like Richies Plank experience/TheBlu once and then knowing I didn't need to ever try them again.

Interesting. I thought we already had small enough high-res screens? I swear I keep seeing articles about how Samsung has come up with a new higher res screen perfect for gen 3 VR or something. My impression was that the big improvement in, say, Go vs Rift CV1 was in lens tech, and that a lot of the buzz around the Half Dome prototype was because they managed to get 140 degree fov in the same form factor as Rift CV1..

Obviously we've been developing lens tech for centuries but another thing I was wondering was if there is an analogous use case in the military or science arenas where they need very high powered, lightweight and compact (i.e. single) lenses with extremely low distortion/chromatic aberration over the whole of a large 'sweet spot' area? In other words, are Oculus and co really having to break new ground in lens tech for these HMDs or has this sort of stuff already been 'solved' elsewhere?

The "retina display" line past which it's hard or impossible to see the pixels is about 60 pixels-per-degree (Apple stuff is 57 PPD at 10 inches away from your face). A 4K VR headset only has about 25 PPD, because the screen is two inches from your eyes.

I remember in Abrash's talk a few years ago they were saying humans are capable of 120 pixels/degree. Still, going from the ~15 we're at now to 30 next gen with a wider FOV as well, should make a startling difference.

Posted ITT about a month ago about having to send in my Rift and being worried about custmoer service. After a lot of back and forth Oculus said they couldn't do anything cause the retailer i bought the headset from wasn't a authorized retailer and i would have to do it through them.

Turns out Oculus has this policy where if you don't send in EVERYTHING that was in the original package they won't even look at it. So there was some back and forth where i tried to get out of sending in my one sensor that came with the original deal cause it would take of a big chunk of paint with it when it came off the ceiling i thought (it didn't), but no dice. It didn't matter which sensor i sent in tho, any sensor would do  as long as i sent in one, oh and please to send in the Xbox One controller that came with the package too or NO DEAL BROTHER

I was kinda annoyed at this point, but i sent all of it in. Nobody even looked at it i think cause i instantly got back a brand new headset, and since it was the updated deal i also got one extra sensor and one extra pair of Touch controllers out of the deal. All in all it wasn't too bad, just some annoyances and i can't complain about free stuff. 5/5 would break again

I got Skyrim VR last night - it is on sale at greenmangaming and they have an additional 18% off coupon so it was only 34 bucks. This game was one of the things I was most excited for in VR but when it came out I heard so much negativity about it that I passed considering the original price.

Aaand I was up way too late because wow is it cool. Of course part of that was getting some mods installed, one of my least favorite parts of the game. I didn’t even get past the tutorial because I’m taking it so slow - I’ve played through Skyrim a lot in the past but this felt totally new. I actually jumped a couple of times from the tutorial dragon.

The controls are really unintuitive on the Rift but I’m going to try a mod tonight that fixes that and install a few more mods as well. It really has me hopeful for the future of VR because if a game like this that I have played so much it feels this awe inspiring then I can only imagine how good a fresh RPG AAA title would be.

If anyone hasn’t gotten it and wants to, the code is EXTRA18 for the additional 18% off.
