I don't know how big it is with kids, but there's definitely a whole community around Rubik's Cube and similar puzzles. I got into speedrunning a Rubik's Cube for a couple months and there's a good deal of Youtube people and online resources around it, and people buying weird off-brand ones and modding them and stuff.

In reality I spent 5 minutes of frustration then just peeled the stickers off and put them back on in the right arrangement.

As a kid I had a CD of Rubik's Games, which was a bunch of things that weren't the cube that I liked more because I am bad at cube. My favorite one was one where you had to roll balls up ramps and stuff and into a portal.
