The funny thing is that despite Victoria being “19th century atrocity simulator”, you can’t actually do this because of the way the pop mechanics work. Slave pops are essentially “fixed”. I think they will grow with the birth rate but they can’t migrate and pops can’t promote into or out of the slave class. What this means is that the only places that will ever have slaves are places that start with them. When you choose to make a state into a slave state as the US, it affects the general mood of yankee and Dixie pops, but there won’t actually be any slaves in states that historically didn’t have them.

However, at least in my case, they were people who kept other human beings as property, then fought in a war with the explicit purpose of preserving chattel slavery as an economic institution.

The latter being the part of my families story that wasn’t highlighted much growing up. But hey, we don’t highlight all kinds of terrible poo poo our “countrymen” have done—like invading Mexico and stealing half of its territory or the outright genocide of Native Americans in North America.

Edit

Incidentally I am always amused by the traitor label when applied to any American at any time when the entire foundation of the United States is predicated on the people who fought in the revolution being engaged in a gigantic act of ‘treason.’

The Brits can call George Washington a traitor all they want. We won the war and could beat them up again if we want to so they prob shouldn’t tho.

A traitor's only allowed to rise above the label of treason if they win, which the CSA very much did not. They all got off easy when they all got pardoned and the reconstruction got junked so that they could go off and construct their own version of history and freely develop ways to crush the newly free blacks into submission, the least they deserve is to be called traitors. Ambiguity in the constitution or not (mostly not), there's nothing ambiguous about the decision to shoot guns at the people who share the same language, history, family, and everything else, just because somebody got elected who wanted to cool off on treating human beings as animals.

I don't know exactly what your hangups on nationalism are, but I'd rather deal with being obligated to, and free to move around within the whole of the United States rather than be subject to the whims of the local aristocracy of Missouri or some poo poo like that.

The SU didn’t do forced labor by race but by lack of national spirit.

A pretty big distinction.

Stellaris atrocities are a lot less visceral than other Paradox atrocities (at least to me) because
A. they're against cultures that do not, did not, and will not actually exist in real life, and
B. the nature of the atrocities are for the most part things that have not happened in human history and are not possible given human technology
