I read the article, it approaches Howard as a very human character and I respect it for that. But as a listener, I feel like Howard is quite the hypocrite and I really would've loved to read a tell all book of the goings on behind the scene in the studio. I feel like the biggest problem with the show is how there isn't anybody that can hold Howard and other people accountable when they are completely out of touch. I've mostly stopped listening since the youtube purge and just read the news here.

Howard is protected by his refusal to use social media (though this is partly due to his fans being assholes whenever he tried) and how older clips of the show can be tricky to find for non-fans, as YouTube clips keep getting taken down. Those of us who were fans of the show during the early Sirius era had plenty of opportunities to stock up on the old clips/years worth of shows, but those are more difficult to find now. I think we may have seen more of a backlash if Howard was still on AGT, but he was so boring on that show that I'm not sure anyone cared enough to complain. Howard has carved out his own insular piece of the entertainment industry, to the point where it would be difficult to try and drum up controversy over his previous bits in an attempt to get him fired. I doubt Sirius would care at this point.

There are tons of recordings of him being sexist, racist, and more, but people don't care because everyone knew it while it was happening. Not in the Hollywood "we all knew it and didn't do anything about it" way, but in the "we listened to him broadcast it to millions of people everyday" way. There is no controversy and Disney won't be hiring him anyway. The only time Sirius would move is if there is evidence he did this off the air directly to a victim.

Over the last 15-20 years the general public has shifted it's view from Howard being a radio bad boy enemy number one to an elder statesman of comedy. And I don't mean that even as an insult to Howard; a lot of great comedians who were subvervsive and used as a Boogeyman in polite society grow old enough to eventually be respected by those same people. George Carlin or Richard Pryor is a good example of this effect. I think overall Howard was a major pop culture icon of the late 20th century and will be regarded as such in the future.

Joe Rogan cites Howard as a big influence, not just for podcasts but modern comedy in general. Joe said the most nervous he's ever been was the night before his first appearance on the Stern show.
