My favorite part of the history of Christendom is when Catholicism comes crashing down the moment the masse actually read the Bible. Wait a minute, it says rich people are rear end in a top hat right here???

Of course they have since then refined their doublethink to fit these modern challenges.

If I recall there is some bullshit rationalization out there that he meant some gate called eye of the needle and that means it's easy for a rich man to enter heaven.

Yeah and any workplace where there isn't an already existing union millenials aren't likely to unionize due to the precariousness of their finances/jobs. The labor pool is so massive that employers don't have to care very much at all. It's not a risk most people are willing to take - especially if they're worried about getting some sort of employer-blacklisting moving forward. It's a mess.

Haha ya it's real, although the way I heard it explained it was 'the eye of the needle is a door. It's small but if you try really hard ya you can get a camel through! That means it's OK to be wealthy and Christian, you just have to work harder to get into heaven'

Of course this was from an Adventist pastor from the USA that wanted to turn his little Canadian congregation into a megachurch in a fancy new building and spent a shitload of the budget on a sound system that they'd have to pack up every Saturday after church in their rented building and also kicked people out of the church band for not being 'professional' enough.

Religion, justifying stupid bullshit since, well, a super long time ago.

This is what really terrifies me about being a conscious being - that I could find myself so deep into despair and mental illness that I lose most or all of my ability to think things through or discern rational thoughts from irrational thoughts to the point where I fling myself out of a window with a wife and kids left behind. I've been close-ish to that place, it's some intense bullshit.

As someone with deep depression and these kindve thoughts every day its interesting to be self aware of it. The edge is there and the irrational/deppressed-rationalized thoughts just serve to pull you closer to it. And when you're having those types of thoughts they really do circle around and make you irrational only to have you realize how stupid you were being later on. You know later when saaaay you're NOT in the mood to kill yourself.
Being a conscious being also sucks in regard to being ever more aware of how hosed everything around us only compounds this.

Outrail posted:

That post about millennials and that post about ~5% union participation. Isnt the millennial generation in general ripe for unionization?

I mean there's got to be a way to make it work without management firing everyone.

In very brief, unions in the USA had their most successful recruiting times during the Great Depression. Millions and millions of people who had never been in a union or had family in a union or anything were joining up, they were PISSED, and the Russian Revolution had just happened ~15-20 years ago. That was basically the impetus for the New Deal - FDR went to rich people and said 'look we gotta do something here or it's all over.' He went back to the unions and said 'I'm gonna help you guys out and I'm gonna get money from the rich to do it, but you have to drop the talk about revolution.' And they (pretty much) went along with that. Then comes minimum wage (higher than it is today, adjusting for inflation), unemployment, social security, and millions of government jobs.

Now, about half the rich people FDR went to weren't convinced* and have been doing their best to dismantle all that ever since (that's where people like Koch Bros come from). They killed the labor movement, they demonized socialism and communism, etc. It was done with intent. It's not just a coincidence that union participation has been sinking like a stone ever since or that the mildest criticism of the economic system is labeled "EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SUBVERSIVE AND DISLOYAL!"

SO to answer the actual question - yes this generation is ripe for unionization but it'll probably require another big recession. If this does happen what will be interesting will be to see if we get another concession to help the masses out or if this time the elites/rich say 'nah gently caress you' and thus ensure the destruction of capitalism by neutering the part of capitalism that is supposed to mitigate the excesses that cause such instability.

* fun fact: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_Plot

quote:

In 1936 William Dodd, the U.S. Ambassador to Germany, wrote a letter to President Roosevelt in which he stated,

A clique of U.S. industrialists is hell-bent to bring a fascist state to supplant our democratic government and is working closely with the fascist regime in Germany and Italy. I have had plenty of opportunity in my post in Berlin to witness how close some of our American ruling families are to the Nazi regime. ... A prominent executive of one of the largest corporations, told me point blank that he would be ready to take definite action to bring fascism into America if President Roosevelt continued his progressive policies. Certain American industrialists had a great deal to do with bringing fascist regimes into being in both Germany and Italy. They extended aid to help Fascism occupy the seat of power, and they are helping to keep it there. Propagandists for fascist groups try to dismiss the fascist scare. We should be aware of the symptoms. When industrialists ignore laws designed for social and economic progress they will seek recourse to a fascist state when the institutions of our government compel them to comply with the provisions.[44][45][46][47]

Well that's not necessarily a bad thing if the UBI amount is at least equal to the amount of benefits people get. I'd expect a real UBI to at least be able to pay for housing, food, and healthcare. It's more efficient to just give people cash than dole it out for specific earmarked purposes. Turns out most people just go buy stuff they need and pay bills and don't immediately go to Vegas and blow it all on red.

I don't think it will save capitalism and is more kicking the can down the road a bit but that's complicated as gently caress to get into (I could also be wrong!).

The next recession is going to coincide with the socioeconomic effects of climate change which will include droughts famines wars and mass migration of people from the more arid regions to places like Europe and Asia.

And the rich now have access to semi autonomous drones that can blow things up.

So basically we're all damned and it's just going to keep getting worse until the entire house of cards falls apart and the world literally stops making the things the rich need to survive and at that point ya we might see some real change by then we're all pretty much dead anyway.

However, the general consensus is that humans are turbo-hosed unless we do something yesterday.

Even if we all stop burning fossil fuels today, the sheer momentum of climate change is pretty much impossible to stop.

There is no reason to believe that should a UBI be implemented the capitalist class would not immediately try and hollow out it's funding sources, size of payouts, institute all kinds of means testing etc.

There is a reason why a number of rich billionaires are flirting with the idea of UBI, because they know it will be cheaper in the long run and still allow for concentration of wealth.

UBI is like your dad offering to let you live in his place after college, but with strings attached. And you are powerless to complain, lest you be kicked to the curb.

If we had a government program to guarantee jobs for everybody, it would give workers "too much" bargaining power... Which is why techbros aren't talking about it.
