Wasn't that the one where the news interviewed this one guy who talked about how horrible it was that he watched a friend burn to death but his hands were too full of his belongings to stop and help?

I've heard that after an impact like that, even if the hat looks fine and seems undamaged, you should discard it and get a new one- is that true? (I'm not in a profession that usually requires hard-hats. )

Platystemon posted:I think you’re talking about the Station Square collapse, but the Algo Centre Mall collapse isn’t that far off. The former, yeah. The actual cause was a bit more complex, of course. quote:At 9AM on the morning of April 23, 1988, customers were let into the store as part of a grand opening sale for senior citizens. Within 10 minutes an employee noticed water spraying from an overhead pipe that had burst. It was buckling under pressure from a roof beam that was twisting out of shape above a steel column. The 4.5 minute-long structural failure was heard and witnessed by many of the store occupants, including several who took photographs of the twisting and crushed beam. Evacuation alerts were issued through the public address system and the store was emptied in less than 5 minutes. The mayor of Burnaby, Bill Copeland, who presided over the opening ceremonies, assisted in directing the evacuation of approximately 600 customers and 307 employees.[2]

I get why a short circuit in large batteries is pretty much a nightmare scenario...how does a badly patched hole contribute to this? Also, ahhhh, wtf they were patching damaged batteries and their patch didn't even stop the loss of electrolyte?! Oh, is the leaking electrolyte the cause of possible shorts? tactlessbastard posted:OSHA inspector shows up at Spithead, gets flogged around the fleet "I know its a full storm wind, sailor, but you have the ratlines." Nebakenezzer posted:Most sailors couldn't swim being able to swim recreationally is kind of a luxury. when the thai boys were in the cave, many people commented on how they couldn't swim although thailand is a fairly waterlogged country. well, if you have to share all your swimming holes, rivers etc. with pollution, boats, and wildlife... this is true historically as well. it wasn't until after or during the second world war that the us navy required sailors to learn how to swim, which means teaching them how to swim, because few people lived in an environment where they had access to a safe place to swim as a child. it's often just easier to tell kids to stay the hell away from water
