Dumbledore being gay was literally just Rowling trying to seem inclusive after the fact when she was called out on it, same with "well I never said that Hermione wasn't black". She is a typical middle class liberal, making inclusive sounds when it's easy without doing the actual spade work, while going on about aspiration and hard work and dogwhistling about the poor when she literally used state welfare to find the time to write the first book with no expectation that it would become the insane mega-hit that it did. She is a two-faced, ladder-pulling piece of poo poo, so gently caress giving her any benefit of the doubt.

When did she do these things?
She's very vocal about the rich paying their taxes and funding public services

JK Rowling has said some things I disagree with and think are stupid re: her being a left-leaning centrist who supports Israel (and she also seems to be transphobic, I think?), but people on the left have a habit of making up extra charges whenever a public figure says things like that, and then spreading it down to be digested uncritically by people who read the information secondhand.

Her politics are pretty firmly democratic socialist as far as I can tell. She's supported Labour since forever. The Blairites had problems but they didn't squeeze welfare like the Tories have, and that's the political camp she's always been in. They might if they were in power now, but they didn't when they were.

Yeah really

JK Rowling posted:

"I chose to remain a domiciled taxpayer for a couple of reasons. The main one was that I wanted my children to grow up where I grew up, to have proper roots in a culture as old and magnificent as Britain’s; to be citizens, with everything that implies, of a real country, not free-floating ex-pats, living in the limbo of some tax haven and associating only with the children of similarly greedy tax exiles.
A second reason, however, was that I am indebted to the British welfare state; the very one that [former UK PM] Mr. Cameron would like to replace with charity handouts. When my life hit rock bottom, that safety net, threadbare though it had become under John Major’s Government, was there to break the fall. I cannot help feeling, therefore, that it would have been contemptible to scarper for the West Indies at the first sniff of a seven-figure royalty cheque."

There are about 60 billionaires in the UK and JK Rowling is literally the only one not engaged in off-shore tax-avoiding chicanery. She allegedly pays more tax in the UK than every other UK billionaire combined.

I'm sure there's plenty of things you can criticise about her but "dogwhistling about the poor" and being a "ladder-pulling piece of poo poo" aren't among them.

Chiefly because she thought he couldn't win, she felt his persistence was sabotaging the party by saddling them with an impossible to elect leader, and because of his pro-Palestine stance. I'm pretty sure she was wrong on all of those counts, but those were the reasons why she disliked him. She never took issue with his socialist politics, especially re: helping the poor and disabled, and in fact has frequently advocated for those causes herself.

Android Blues
Nov 22, 2008

Like her pitch was basically: the Blair era boosts to welfare helped me and allowed me to feed my family when I was very poor. Now, the Conservatives have cut welfare drastically and poor and disabled people are dying in droves. Corbyn is unelectable by the centre-right leaning British electorate, so him staying on as leader is going to keep the Conservatives in power and prevent us from ever having a humane welfare policy again.

Like, she was wrong, he was more electable than anyone on the Blair wing of the party has been in years, but it wasn't his welfare policies she was taking issue with.

Exploration is ill-advised.
Bojack and Sarah-Lynn seem to display a common problem with kids from abusive and unhealthy show business environments; a lack of a sense of boundaries and age-appropriate behaviour because they never had a chance to learn it themselves. Michael Jackson comes to mind. Bojack's upbringing basically involved being dragged out as a dancing monkey (or horse) for her high society doings and otherwise expected to constantly work for the smallest amount of approval, and he passed that on to Sarah-Lynn as genuine advice because that's all he knows.

hollywoo ruined both sarah lynn and bojack's lives. it's just that bojack was an adult who could have intervened in her life as a child, or as a much older adult in her life as a younger adult, but he was incapable of doing so because of his life also being destroyed by the system

they're both victims except that bojack always had more power and agency to make a positive change to her life than she had to his

really aside from the mutual drug bender and past enablement the worst things that bojack did to sarah lynn was neglecting her as a child actor (not really his role to be her dad anyway) and then showing up to use her fame when she was complaining about how her life is just being used and pushed around by other people for their own benefit

like his role seems magnified because the show is about him and his story and the things he does from day to day but their relationship wasn't all bad. it's just that when you get two hosed up addicts together, well, bad things happen

I SUPPORT ALL THE PREDATORS
Their brief sexual hookup in season 1 is also pretty gross for BoJack.

That said, it’s playing right into BoJack’s narcissism to think that he is to blame for all of Sarah Lynn’s problems.

It’s like his narcissism for thinking that he plays a much greater role in Hollyhock’s issues, or Herb’s cancer, or that he’s the center of Penny’s every waking thought, etc. It’s sort of rooted in him wanting to do better and to make up for his mistakes, but it’s also incredibly egocentric and damaging and has led to him relapsing several times now.

I actually read Bojack begging for her to be part of his show as way more impactful and felt like they really paint it as “The Beginning of the End” for her. The scene draws it out and then really clinches and focuses on her disappointment when she realizes he wants what everyone else wants, and the only ‘Dad’ she ever really had was the same piece of poo poo her real dad was...

Which might explain why she fucks him so readily in S1, come to think of it.

Seems to be a theme with both of them that going from an abusive family to stardom with all the wealth and popularity to do whatever they want basically inevitably turbofucked Bojack, Sarah-Lynn and countless other people in Hollywoo. Sarah-Lynn actually being smart enough to realise it but at that point not knowing how to live any other way.

They're not very subtle about it, really. Also I don't know if it's been shown, but apparently Princess Caroline's mother was a servant to a rich family, and a drunken layabout that PC constantly had to clean up after and do the work for so they wouldn't end up homeless. It's almost too on the nose.

I always thought Sarah-Lynn’s story might be a little bit inspired by Drew Barrymore. Her early life was insane. She hung out at Studio 54 as a nine year old, smoking and drinking, because she was famous and there was simply nobody to say no to her. In fact, people thought it was pretty hilarious to hang out with some drunk kid. I’m honestly amazed she managed to get her life together.

Wasn't she inspired specifically by Amy Winehouse? (It might have been maybe too on the nose to have her die at 27 rather than 30)

There is definitely a recurring theme of people realizing how destructive their basic patterns are, but being unable or unwilling to change them.

Princess Caroline's childhood hasn't been shown, but she explained it to Bojack in the episode where he fires her. Que:

Bojack: How come you never told me that before?

PC: I did. Several times.

Bojack: Oh...
