Who the gently caress are these people in their mid thirties who hear the call of the sea and decide now, at some of my highest earning years, put me into the military? My advice would be join the reserves (as an officer jfc) and do some ATs and poo poo. If you like the culture on ATs than swap over. Of course I have no idea what the age cutoffs are for that sort of thing, I was a regular idiot who joined when I was 20.

Personally as an enlisted reservist I spend roughly 1/4 to 1/2 my years on orders of one sort or another. Never long enough in once place to really learn my job but never expected of much because i'm just a Reservist plugging a man-sized hole in a budget. Use it or lose it baby! My unit does all it's AT in Hawaii so once a year I get a work-vacation doing labor that's usually completely unrelated to what I trained to do. But poo poo it's still Hawaii. Of course I know other reservist who spend their AT driving up and down the Central Valley CA sleeping in tents and developing bad rashes so your experience may vary. The health insurance is really good though.

Reserve admin is literally the worst aspect of the Reserves because NOSCs are usually manned by a bunch of broke dick, sad brained shore duty sailors doing work outside of their rates. There are some excellent officers and senior enlisted who have been great for me but its not norm.

On my AT, I enjoyed getting to play Sea Story Chief and talk about such weighty topics as Marines getting caught loving under a HMMWV, liberty stories, and how on USS LAST SHIP the Ship's CO got the equivalent of subtweeted by C5F. Sea stories were more fun to tell than Afghanistan stories.

CountFosco, what are you looking to do in the Navy? Are you looking to sail ships or fly planes? Do you have an engineering degree, or something related to weather? If it's sail ships, there are a lot of changes being implemented right now because of last summer's collisions. It's training that was desperately needed, but it's still extremely frustrating to me that it took an additional 10 people dying before the Navy realized that the way they were doing things in 7th Fleet was unsustainable. Never mind the people going overboard (which happens more then you'd think). If that interests you, then you'll get a lot of time in simulators and on the bridge in order to prove that you know what the hell is happening and that you're competent at your primary job. If its fly planes; great. Naval aviation is filled to the brim right now and all of the Ensigns are at NPS taking our parking. So, you might end up here too getting a random graduate certificate and some nice downtime in the greater Bay area. If you want engineering or intel or something, have fun. They seem like they have a lot of fun. And at 34, you may not be able to be Active Duty, especially if you hit 35 before time of commission. Reserves may be the only option if you truly feel the call of the sea. As other have pointed out, your bosses are all likely to be 24 (if you work for a second tour) or someone who's 30 (if you just have a Department Head that you report to). There are great Department Heads and there are dirtbag ones.
