I just assumed my controller issues were due to conflicts between it and my wacom drivers and I'm somewhat reassured that I'm not the one with the worst case here.

Basically on my end the gamepad is fine for everything except, strangely, being unable to use the dpad to change styles and being near impossible to parse my weird mashed-together workarounds during rhythm minigames. In both cases, the keyboard works fine.

You can miss absolutely nothing during the game outside of some optional achievements, full stop. You might not be able to do certain activities or substories at certain points in the story, but you'll always be able to go back and do stuff. (For series newcomers, beating the game gives you access to a sandbox mode, where you can carry over your save and wander around doing minigames and completing whatever activities and sidequests you had left to your hearts' content.)

And I wouldn't even worry about that, because if you truly want every achievment you're gonna have to play the game twice anyway, to beat it on it's unlockable difficulty.

My controllers (both xbox and xbox one pc versions) both get detected in the game just fine, but for whatever crazy reason, the buttons do nothing in game.

Like if you go to options, you can remap the controller buttons using the controller. It SEES the loving controller. It even changes to xbox buttons if you press a button during the actual game! But nothing else happens. Infuriating.

I'm having issues with massive input lag, and my buttons being reversed/jumbled. Plus the game seems to think there's no deadzone on either stick so I can't remap anything without it being like "remap it to left stick moving right? ok!"

There are a couple of sidequests you need to do in chapter 3-4 which can only be done with Majima, or else you'll be locked out of getting one of the helpers for the Real Estate side quest

VSync might already be enabled, but the maxFPS somehow defaults to 240, which is way above what the engine was supposed to handle.

This did work as a temporary fix, but it was a pain in the rear end to exit the game and change the file every time I wanted to use the UFO catcher machines. Instead, I found that going into the graphics settings and changing MSAA from 2x to 4x drops my frame rate enough to be able to use the machines. It's still a lame workaround, but it's quite a bit faster than exiting and restarting the game.

For anyone having Xbox 360/One controller issues, go to Steam -> Settings -> Controller -> General Controller Settings and make sure generic controller support is unchecked. If you have any of those options checked, Steam is gonna be screwing with your controls. Choose your detected controller at the bottom and click calibrate to change deadzone sensitivity if needed. I think if you have the support options checked, it also hijacks games' sensitivity settings and you'll need to change sensitivity in the same screen. I was having major issues with using a controller with Prey until I discovered it was trying to use Steam controller settings instead of a default xinput setup.

Valve tried pretty hard to get controllers working across all games and on one hand, it's nice because you can emulate xinput for games that never had support or only had directinput support (like Morrowind), but on the other, it totally jacks with a ton of games that already had good controller support. It seriously took me close to an hour of fiddling with Steam controller settings before I finally got my bone controller working with Prey because the sensitivity was just totally messed up and in-game settings had no effect on the controller at all. I didn't even know Steam had its own controller sensitivity settings (separate from the calibration I mentioned) until last month.

Is that minigame where you just dodge one drunk guy supposed to be insanely hard? It took me so many tries to do the first one that I gave up after that, the game tells you to use the dodge button but it feels like the guys hitbox is massive. In the end I did it by just blocking and running away instead.

I may just be terrible at this game though, it feels like the random rear end people you fight are insanely easy compared to the bosses who all need frame perfect timings to dodge which I'm terrible at.

with bosses, my best suggestion is just to keep your distance and take it slow. Once they've committed to an attack, well... they've committed, so circle around and lay into them in the back. Yakuza 0 is one of the series easier games in all honesty. Just keep your guard up. Eventually, both Kiryu and Majima will pick up counters which convert boss fights into hilarious poo poo-shots. Also learn to use Heat Actions not just as a source of damage, but also as a way to back out of tense situations. Again, as the game progresses, Kiryu and Majima will get enough heat actions to always have one ready.

Yakuza is one of those "Click" games I feel, it's going to feel sluggish and punishing in boss fights until finally it all clicks together and then you'll zen it.

This is super important, especially in Kiwami whenever that comes out. Bosses in Kiwami are miserable and part of that comes from bosses being able to regenerate health twice per battle. The intended counter for that is to use a Kiwami attack, which is a special Heat action, but any old Heat action will take them out of it.

I've dropped the game for the moment, only because I was already in the middle of playing BOTW anyway. But from what I've played I love the style and humor of everything. So I tried this like five times last night before finally getting it. I ended up realizing that L1 (guard) is what you're supposed to use and then Dodging using R1+X. I'm sure the game tells you that L1 dodges hits at some point, but I must have missed it somehow since I skipped a bunch of scenes, having already watched the game before.

If you use the L1 dodge, and then dash then that minigame is pretty easy.
