The Last Jedi had some good bits but a lot of it was basically 'the plot hooks from the last movie? don't matter, lol' and I think it had either too many passes through the cutting room or not enough. I think the problem is that it was deeply mediocre, which for a franchise film is far worse than being bad. Hell, you can have all kinds of fun with a bad movie.

The two plot hooks that "go nowhere" are Snoke and Reys lineage and that second one definitely goes somewhere and somewhere very faithful to the point of Empires big Vader daddy twist.

The Last Jedi has some pretty serious issues. Pacing is the biggest one. You've got 4 storylines going on simultaneously but it all feels really inconsistent in terms of how time passes. Then there's the dumb Harry Potter planet that feels really out of place. That said Luke facing down Kylo is one of the best things in the franchise. The obsessive TLJ haters mostly come down to "Diversity makes me angry"

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the prequel trilogy ends up better regarded than the sequel trilogy, because at least the prequels have a consistent vision and tone and involve stuff the audience kind of cares about, or at least kinda occupy somewhere between 'kinda enjoy' and 'love to mock'. While I think TFA got a lot of slack for being "more Star Wars!!
