Bad EXP received

Victoria has gotten across the lake by unknown and unexplored means.

After the hearing loss Raven had to go through, it's kind of rude.

According to Student, Victoria is super-popular and everyone loves her.

I guess the rest of this gets to be extra fun because all of Kiki's actions are framed in light of her knowing there are orphans held hostage.

"Incidentally, this new student also came to me asking for that. I do not suppose that is coincidence?"
"No, not at all. This is Raven, a very good friend of mine. We're working to save them together!"
"Right. Truly, I am moved by your plight. However... As you well know, Victoria, I can only award that Machine to a graduating student of our Academy. One must attain inner strength before acquiring worldly strength. And to disregard that procedure is to disrespect every student who has followed it before."

(We got an as you know hell yeah)

(Kiki herself made the academy, by the way, she made this rule)

"Then, Sensei, I wish to apply for graduation. "
"So you will. I suspected you might finally ask.
"

"Sensei..."
"But nevermind that. We mustn't let inner turmoil complicate outside affairs. Victoria, were you successful in your challenge of the Reborn League, as I had asked of you?"
"I admit, Sensei, I was not. So much was going on that I had other priorities."
"I see."

So what's the graduation ceremony like, "congratulations on achieving a state of perfect zen, here's a cd that teaches pokemon to punch, but you need to beat the edgy nihilist dad all the way over there in order to use it." Did anyone graduate in the weird gap after Corey died but before Aya took over? Hell, isn't even getting to Aya a huge ordeal since the wasteland is sealed?

"And how about yourself, Raven?"
"Raven can do it! She has lots of badges already, one more won't be a problem!"

As one of the few times a gendered pronoun is used in reference to Raven, the game has three versions of this line depending on one's gender selection at the start. It uses he/she/xe. I recall Reborn avoiding this by mostly using they.

"So you intended to pass off the Machine to an outsider regardless. I suppose it cannot be helped, but knowing that that is your intention, I must test Raven as well. Victoria, you will stay here and test for graduation. Raven, your challenge lies elsewhere."

poo poo she as you know'd me

"volcanic mountain. After all, it is the ash therefrom that grants the beach its grey hues. Atop Pyrous Mountain is one of my newest, though finest, students."
"That's-- Oh, goodness!"
"Have faith in your companion, Victoria. Climb the mountain. Find my student. Challenge him."

Incidentally, Machamp learns Strength on evolution. Kiki should know this. She has a Machamp.

I think Victoria likes running after me too much.

"He was actually once the Fire-type Leader for the Reborn League, but he retired and came here after something bad happened. Anyway, he's really strong."

"I did not just say that. Oh, yes! In order to get very far into Pyrous Mountain, you may have to drain the lava from the upper floors. If you look, there should be choke points in between the levels, and sometimes they get clogged up. Just give the right one a good smash to clear it and you'll be good to go! Say hi to Cal for me, please?"

To the southwest of the beach is the trail to the mountain.

I don't know quite how to begin courtship, what sort of gifts does excess lava li-

Oh, care for as in exercise caution. Oh.

OST: Atmopshere - Smoke

One of the core themes of Reborn, apparently, is treating Pokemon realistically. Anyway let's stand next to magma in the middle of an active volcano and not even care.

As you would expect from a volcano, common encounters are kung fu muppets.

Super-heated field is pretty straight-forward. Fire hotter.

Some, but not all, fire moves cause it to turn into the same inferno as they do to forest.

The thing Victoria talked about is these chimney-looking fuckers.

But if the lava can't drain anywhere you fight a snail.

Lava pools block the way forward, so we have to go down, down down down to the bottom:

The loving lava ocean underneath Apophyll.

This apparently drains the lake on the floor above, leaving it open for the next floor's, etc.

Oh, you can fish in lava.

There's no encounters definded though, so you'll never catch anything.

Per usual with Reborn, there's a billion tiny branches.

With stuff like the stone that my growlithe needs to become an optimal dogger.

And the notes on super-heated field. It makes fire hot. There you go.

Pyrorus has Alolan Diglett in it.

Not quite Excadrill but I'll take it.

Pyrorus Mountain has has five floors, four of which have lava lakes. Jumping down holes that presumably lava drained out of a moment ago is surprisngly easy and painless and doesn't lead to the end of T2.

Sawk and Throh are pretty good EXP and appear at a ratio of about three per every step. There's also the infinite stream of Magcargos if you prefer that for whatever reason.

Oh yeah, in order to get to the top I have to get the top 3 lakes drained all the way, which means running all the way to the bottom several times.

We're doing this to move one rock.

Finally we reach the top, where there's no music.

Does have a nice view of the academy below it, though.

"Can I help you? Kiki sent you here too, huh? To battle me? I haven't had a serious battle since I resigned as Gym Leader. And even then, I was misguided. I had let anger drive and control me."

"Everything I'd ever done was just to try and prove myself better than him. You're challenging the Reborn League now, correct?"

Yeah, nice girl, really smart, currently the hostage of terrorists.

"...So you have. How is she? Timid, right? That might have been my fault. I used to keep her around. Watch over her. She and I connected on some level. We were both always scorned by our brothers, and our families. Blake... He always got the attention. He got all the praise for everything, and then anything I ever did was just a sloppy second. Back then I was too full of rage to see that he was the source of my anger. But Shelly understood. What she didn't understand was that my anger wasn't directed, like hers, towards trying to earn his love. She said something backwards, and it set me off. I reacted terribly and--"

man it'd be nice if a character could just have a personality without it being the result of emotional trauma.

"And yet, because of it, I was finally able to change. Look at me, just rambling on. Sorry. I suppose being assigned to meditate alone for days on end has that effect on people. I can see clearly now, but the source of my energy is exhausted. Formerly rage, and now, what do I have? Perhaps I'll stop talking and find out in a battle with you."

OST: Battle- Misc.

The version the game uses is slightly different but still as bland.

OFSelects Takami Asano (Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor): Deep Night (OST ver.)

The OST version of this song has extra guitar wankery, so of course I go with it.

Couldn't you have at least changed your clothes?

Despite being a former fire-type specialist on the super-heated field, Cal leads with a Barbaracle, a water/rock dude.

Cal's Magmortar is the only guy who can set the field on fire with Lava Plume, but since it's using a terrain-boosted STAB move to do so, it's... pretty likely.

And of course it has the requisite TM moves that we can't.

Swiggity is one of the odder teammates, but she's the result of Reborn's hostile conditions.

First, she gets her hidden ability, Simple, that makes stat changes doubled. Calm Mind is two stages to special attack and defense instead of one, and X-Items are a staggering +4. This combines with her naturally high speed and critical fighting and ground resistances to make her pretty good at getting that one turn of set-up she needs.

She also gets Psychic by level, and it's a really good move to launch after the boosts.

Air Slash falls short of the OHKO here, but its 30% flinch chance is unfair garbage.

I try Charge Beam, since its boost is also doubled, but turns out using a 50-power move even at +2 isn't really enough and Swiggity gets punched in her face for her trouble.

Mr. Sandman is another attempt to use naturally good level-up lists to my advantage.

Call also has a Turtonator, surprisingly lacking Shell Smash, and a Hakamo-o.

The core of his team is a trio of aggressive fire-types on advantageous terrain, but the cave you were just in can cough up Dugtrio and water's only slightly weakened, so it isn't too big. The Barbaracle lead means you can drop rain somehow and pretty well chump him.

The problem I'd say is that it's a little early for boss battles on superheated terrain, as you don't have much that can use Blizzard to remove it.

"Perhaps it's for the best. I only ever started training Fire types to beat my brother's Ice. How stupid of me. In any case, you can go and tell Kiki that you defeated me. I'll be staying up here. I've got things to finish. Er, meditation, that is."

Well, we did what she asked, now for the next excuse to not be given the TMX04.

"No. Willpower... is a muscle. I will... not let... mine slip... away. I have always said: One must fight hard to defeat the chaos inside."

"Oh, Raven. You've returned. Please pay no regard to the weakness you just witnessed. I'm perfectly fine. I was only... winded."
"How was Cal? Er, I mean, were you able to beat him?"
"So you did. I see."

Is Apophyll also famous for its foreboding wording?

"That means there is only one thing left to do."

"If you win, you will have your badge, and more importantly, your Machine. I will be waiting in the courtyard.'

Well, she said she'd give the machine if I beat Cal, but I guess another battle first is fine. I guess.

Goddammit Victoria, I thought I was making a joke.

"Instead she just showed me how to run things around the Academy. Gave me an overview on policies, and..."

"She's been sick for months, but she's tried her hardest to hide it from everyone. She only told me before. Apparently there's no cure. And... I think she intends for me to take over when she... Nevermind, but, Raven!"

"We'll convince her to give us the Machine some other way... But battling takes so much of a toll on her, I just can't let you do it."

"If you can't beat me, there's no reason at all that you should even try to fight Kiki!"

Again, Victoria thinks we shouldn't battle a gym leader due to her distress.

And again, she'll fail.

She's up to five Pokemon now. Kind of cute that her Pancham and Torracat reach their final forms for the same battle.

Her Pikachu's evolved into Raichu-A, but it hasn't put away its Pichu things; nasty plot sweeps are dangerous with this thing's coverage.

The evolution to Gallade was blatantly obvious. Thank god I have Shadow Claw now.

Remember the axiom: if it can, it will use Fake Out. The chance is perfect to pop items.

The Raichu-A and Incineroar changes make Victoria a lot more dangerous than her team would've been before with regular Raichu and Emboar. Mostly because the new things are just better than the old, but also because it gives some variety to her team's typing and stat spreads.

Also Incineroar's hidden ability makes it incredibly dangerous. Well, if I weren't still on +1.

"They're more important than she is, right? ...I'll just go."

I wonder how many more times Victoria will do this song and dance.

How many times will cool 6v6 battles be treated like loving trips to the chopping block.

So wait, let me get this straight. This person is fully aware that there's people in genuine danger and the only way to save them is to use Strength. She's still making you do a lot of stuff just to get that HM, sorry, TMX. She's doing this in spite of knowing that her life is also at risk and she may genuinely die if she fights you, while increasing the risk that many others, literal children at that, will also die. She gets nothing out of this, beyond keeping up dumb tradition.

Kiki is a far more effective villain than Team Whatever. She's willing to kill herself just to inconvenience the player. Jesus.

How does 'standing still and calling instructions to monsters' take such a toll on her that she might obviously will literally die? She's not doing anything. Except stalling so more children will die with her, I guess, but we've already had the creepy morbid ghost-type trainer.

Also was Cal a Kickstarter backer or something? Can't think of any other reason why we needed his entire angsty clichéd backstory vomited on us all at once.

At this point I've just lost track of how many loose ends we have going on here.

When Kiki dies battling us (because we all know that'll definitely happen, there is no subtlety in this game), will that make us a murderer? Will we have to be added to the end-of-update murder stats?

Well I was wondering what the reason for the new title was. And um, wow. I got bored and made my interpretation of what the not quite as good 5999 word document may look like. Though with the most recent update, I was almost tempted to make one that puts in perspective all the things that had to be done just to move one rock. There''s like three of them in this one update alone. And from the horribly blatant foreshadowing, there's likely going be at least five more things to do as a direct result of whatever happens next.

Also I approve of Devil Survivor music replacement.

A better question is "who cares?" She is not sympathetic and her death is honestly deserved given the amount of bullshit she is making us go through. Like we are trying to save loving orphans and here she is trying to make sure she can be as much of a butt about this as possible. She is also emotionally manipulating the gently caress out of Victoria, who had to do her absurd song-and-dance again, so that just adds to the list.

Great, we're going to kill a woman because the game won't let us solve this trivial problem in any of a dozen simpler, less dangerous ways I can think of. This is such a stupid, contrived bit of melodrama, 'cause Kiki's probably going to accidentally off herself doing any number of things - if she's really that ill, I really don't think not battling her is going to prolong her life for an appreciable amount of time. Just have it so that she knows she's going to die, she gives the player Strength anyway, but have her ask the player to give her one last battle before she passes away or something. Then you can agree, and she gives you a useful item, or refuse, and get the feeling of being a tremendous arse who won't listen to a dying woman's final wish.

The Door Frame
Dec 5, 2011

I don't know man everytime I go to the gym here there are like two huge dudes with raging high and tights snorting Nitro-tech off of each other's rock hard abs.
I want to lay out a philosophy ~thing~ that I think could have made this gym (or at least what we've seen so far) so much better and perhaps saved it from itself. I really liked this place before the volcano showed up, and I know how it could easily be fixed, volcano and melodrama still intact. But first, why does the volcano island with, lakes of lava and active lava flows, have a zen school that can be seen from the lip of the caldera? I mean, Cinnabar Island already happened, this is asking for trouble

:words: Incoming
If they'd paid more attention to their eastern philosophy wikipedia articles class, they may have come across a particular kami named Sanbo Kojin, the tri-natured god. Kojin is a fire god of ambiguous gender, and their innate nature is as a force of destruction, but after the first fire god used his fire to kill Kojin's mother, Kojin decided to control and refine his/her fire. Their chosen nature is one of judgement, they use their fire to cleanse the impurities of man and nature like a crucible does with ore. Their true nature is that of the hearth, they are the destructive power of fire tamed to improve the lives of all who may gather around it. This makes Kojin the perfect model for how this gym could be improved. And an actual anchor to focus the scattered philosophy of this gym

So here's my list of proposed changes:
-Make the fire theme clear from the word go. Have have the encounters in the beginning of the volcano be rock/ground pokemon, encounters in the middle should be fire/rock, and on the top level, steel/fire. The encounters now give context to the area and fits thematically with the rest of my proposed changes
-Change the "zen through r/showerthoughts" into "zen through focus and control of your own nature, the destructive potential of pokemon, and the destructive nature of fire itself". That's why we're on a volatile island that could kill everyone and destroy the school, instead of the tranquil areas that zen meditation usually happens at. In the mandatory lecture, just talk about how unrestrained fire will consume all it touches, but a controlled fire can be used to your benefit. A controlled fire will warm the cold, allow you to cook, and if it gets hot enough, make crumbled ore into hardened steel.
-Make Kiki more boisterous, have her trying to purge her inner turmoil by focusing on battling and living somewhere so hostile, despite her terminal illness. It makes her interest in Cal much more profound, makes his team and their relationship to his backstory more profound, and explains why she allows him to meditate in the caldera of an active volcano. And most importantly, it gives Kiki some actual motivation to go back on her word and commit suicide via Raven. She ultimately must decide whether or not we have the will and the ability to control the TMX she was supposed to give to us after beating Cal, showing the downside of her obsession to control her emotions

TL;DR-
If the writer of this section even watched the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender, they'd know a good overview of what a good fire/meditation philosophy is. Seriously, that Deserter episode mixed with a specific kami that embodies similar values is the cliffsnotes of my whole argument

Fake Edit: what is Kiki's inner turmoil?

This is really what gets me about all the NPCs in this game. The idea behind this (at least partially) was to introduce some realism into a pokemon game. All of these characters are based on actual people in their RP circle, right? So there was an attempt to make them NOT come across as awful, greedy, childish, selfish characters? They wouldn't deliberately portray themselves in such an unflattering light.

But they still... how do I even phrase this? They still fall into the pokemon trap of having the characters exist for a single purpose (giving you a gym badge) and then disappearing into the ether. Even when there's a crisis happening they won't lift a finger to help or they get in your way by making you jump through hoops for petty reasons even as the sky is falling down around them. And while that's faithful to how NPCs are handled in the main series, because the player has to be the hero who settles everything, here it's worse because they're actual people aware that literal orphans are being tortured but remain totally unmoved. The reason behind this is transparent and video gamey (this is a pokemon game with pokemon gyms so you HAVE to trudge through all of them to get badges) but the ingame justification just makes everyone involved come across as shockingly callous. All of this because a rock needs to be moved to save orphans but no one is willing to move it.

When the player is the only one doing anything to help, it just makes all the people sitting on their hands look like monsters.
