I just watched GoTG2 in prep for Infinity War and drat, Dave is like easily in one of the top three best things about that movie (Yondu and Rocket rounding out that list, Pratt not so much oddly enough).

I miss the pathos he had in the first movie. He's just basically there for jokes in Guardians 2 and Infinity War.

I can't take Jane seriously as an action hero. I always picture him as that doofus guy from Boogie Nights. Also, Bernthal was way better so there's that too.

Bernthal was great at playing Angry Marine Man but I very seldom felt I was looking at the Punisher. Part of that is due to the script but most of it is down to his performance. I can't imagine Bernthal's Frank keeping a war journal or making snarky jokes about Spider-man. What I can imagine is him going "HURRRGHGGGHHHRARRRRROOORRRRG"

Let's face it: the Punisher is a really uncomfortable right-wing wank character a lot of the time. Netflix and Berenthal did a great job of salvaging something interesting and good from Frank.

That entire episode about the gun control senator is more openly right-wing than 90% of the comics.

Well, poo poo. Respectfully disagree. He seems like the loving Punisher to me, starting with DD s2 when he has Matt chained up on the rooftop plus that amazing prison fight. Different strokes I suppose but Bernthal loving nailed it in my book.

Favorite Punisher is hardly something I'd stake my life on. Bernthal isn't horrible or anything. I think Punisher was very interesting in Daredevil Season 2 but that was mostly the script. He was a lot less compelling in his own series, at least to me. But I know a lot of people really liked that show so w/e.

The Netflix Punisher isn’t necessarily what the character has been more so that it was what the character should have been. It’s an infinitely better take on the character than anything that’s ever been on the page.

There isn't time in Infinity War for him to do much more than jokes, but it's still there in Guardians. He has that scene with Mantis on Ego where he talks about his daughter, and Mantis feels his pain. Granted right before that he calls Mantis ugly and Ego's pet...

I am all for that, just we have a perfectly good Supergirl TV show. Speaking of that, I'm glad that Jessica Cruz is being added to the Superhero girls show thats coming out. I have a hard time imaging that in Johns EDGY AS gently caress BLOOD AND DEATH Green Lantern movie they'd think of adding her.

Co sign. And they didn't have to "pussy him up" or whatever fans of the character seem to care about that detracts from his representation. Frank's violent tendencies and overall world view were explained and demonstrated really well; the way he was CREATED and not born is basically what I mean.

I found Netflix take on the character really great and I never gave a poo poo about Punisher one way or the other through my whole comic book reading career. Netflix gave him a dimension and added some layers to him. Otherwise, he's just Rambo or some other 80's action hero to me.

I like War Zone because of the comical violence (otherwise it's just going to be a gun action movie with Punisher in it), and the line "YOU KRISPY KREME MOTHERFUCKERS". I've seen exactly one episode of Netflix Punisher and I like it, just don't really have the time to watch more right now. I think a character like the Punisher has a couple different facets in him and both takes are good.

Interestingly enough, I stopped by The Firing Range when the Netflix series dropped to see what people there thought about it, and they disliked it, to no surprise. But that's a discussion for the TV thread, I guess.

I love the potoo,
and the potoo loves you.

And other people who adore Frank for killing petty criminals and brown people, and people who hold up Frank as an admirable person.

Netflix Frank only kills one street criminal between both his own show and Daredevil, and that was specifically a guy selling child porn. Otherwise, everyone Frank kills was either involved in his family's death or is trying to kill Frank or his friends - Frank even consciously lets a number of petty criminals go. The show also goes to great lengths to stress that Frank is not a wholesome or admirable guy, even if you can sympathize with him and he's undoubtedly the lighter shade of grey.

Punisher S1 also has a lot to say about America's military adventures in the Middle East and how we treat veterans back at home, absolutely none of it positive. The super right-wing NRA-hat-wearing MAGA vet dude turns out to be a stolen valor fraud who never saw combat, the young super right-wing dude becomes a domestic terrorist, and the only competent, heroic government officer in the whole show is an Iranian-American woman.

If there's a central thesis to Punisher on Netflix, it's that America as a culture and society has a profoundly hosed-up relationship with violence and are all but completely unable to acknowledge, much less grapple with, the damage violence does to communities long after the physical altercation is over.

Jon Bernthal did such a great job of making Frank both likeable and unlikeable when necessary. When he's cold, cruel, and violent, I'm not sitting there thinking "Oh man, this is so badass!" I'm thinking "Oh man, this is a really hosed up and disturbed dude." Then when he's a bit more open and shooting the poo poo with Micro, or hanging out with that family, or in the flashbacks from the army, I'm thinking "Aww man, he'd be a pretty cool dude if he wasn't a psychopath."

That is loving perfect for that character and Bernthal nailed it.

I've said before that the best thing about Netflix Punisher is that whenever he goes full bullet hell, it always felt like a loss. I felt bad whenever Frank had to be The Punisher. He spends a lot of time trying to avoid being that guy in the show. Heroes (or rather protagonists) should always in some way be forced to violence.

Its a small thing and probably easily forgotten by most viewers when in binge mode but its like in episode 5 or 6 where frank scares up micro and says pissed off beats scared every time, and then the final line of the show is frank saying for the first time in my life, im scared, and i think thats a powerful statement given the context of frank

The punisher tv show was good and I like that they gave some nuance to the character BUT it's also a PUNISHER show and he needed to do a lot more PUNISHING. Maybe less to petty street criminals but definitely more to crime bosses and organized crime poo poo and evil secret government hit squads.

It didn't deliver well on the action-y parts I think. Most of the shootouts and fights are forgettable. His best scenes are still in the Daredevil TV show

After Homecoming I paused at the end of the credits to see who they thanked and I think they covered their bases pretty well. Every creator of every character in the movie is listed.

Bendis, Sara Pichelli: Ultimate Spider-Man Miles Morales (Ganke AKA Ned and Donglover's character Aaron Davis)
John Romita: Every 616 Spider-Man character who wasn't created by Lee & Ditko (which I think in this movie is just Shocker but one could make the case for MJ)
Don Lee, Larry Lieber, Jack Kirby: Iron Man co-creators and this covers Happy and Pepper
