quote:

Civil liberties groups and human rights organisations are worried that new legislation to allow home affairs minister Peter Dutton to call in the army for vaguely worded "domestic violence" incidents will give the already-powerful minister even more power.
The legislation was introduced in response to the inquiry into the police and government reaction to the 17-hour Lindt Cafe siege by gunman Man Haron Monis in the Sydney CBD in 2014, that led to the deaths of Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson, as well as Monis.
The legislation sets out that states and territories can request the assistance of the Australian Defence Force in relation to terrorist incidents, sieges and other act of "domestic violence" as defined in section 119 of the Australian Constitution, but also the federal government can call in the army to protect Commonwealth interests.
Under the legislation, in cases where a quick response is needed, the prime minister, or jointly the attorney-general and defence minister, can call in the army in response to incidents.
It also establishes that the minister for home affairs as an "alternative minister" who can authorise an expedited call out with one of the other ministers.
I had not heard of this

Is there something I can do to make the liberal party stop calling my mobile for "polling"?

Asking the person who calls hasn't worked, calling the state office and asking them to stop hasn't worked, and neither has getting asked what I'm currently concerned about and saying "getting political parties to stop calling me".

The last guy actually ignored me when I said "didn't I already ask you guys to stop calling me?" and pushed on with his spiel and questions.

The outgoing Australian public service commissioner, John Lloyd, has blasted “do-gooders telling us what we should eat and drink” in a valedictory speech complaining about the nanny state but warning Labor not to abolish the specialist construction watchdog.

Lloyd – who is still under investigation for an alleged code of conduct breach for his dealings with the Institute of Public Affairs – said he had “copped criticism” in his role and complained that he had found the investigation process “most unsatisfactory”.

In a speech to the Institute of Public Administration Australia in Canberra, Lloyd made light of the controversy. Labor’s Penny Wong has spearheaded questioning about whether Lloyd gave preferential treatment to the IPA – a rightwing thinktank – which he used to lead.

“I thank the IPA-A for organising this event,” Lloyd said on Monday. “I have to be careful with the various institutes I engage with. If I omitted the second A, I may make Senator Wong more unhappy.”

Lloyd said Australians’ “healthy scepticism about authority” was “no longer evident”.

“We are deluged at every turn by do-gooders telling us what we should eat and drink, how we should exercise, how we should think, how we should spend our money, what type of dwelling we should live in,” he said. “It seems every day is a world day for either genuine or mindless causes for good. Virtue signalling is rampant in some quarters.”

Lloyd said there was a danger that good policy advice was being “stifled by pervasive groupthink dictated by what is politically correct”.

“The Canberra setting can be particularly vulnerable to this.”

Polling is exempt from respecting the do-not-call register, so short of blocking the numbers, there isn't much you can do.

Having phonebanked before I can almost guarantee its because there's some requirement saying you're calling on the behalf of X party.

AlphaDog, why not pick from one of these talking points:

* I'm very concerned about the Liberal party's callous disregard of human life with their offshore detention centres.

* I'm very concerned about their lack of meaningful action on climate change and inability to support good environmental policy when it's being put forward by Labor.

* I'm concerned about how most of your candidates are not representative of the gender and ethnic diversity within this great nation.

* I'm concerned about your new foreign influence laws and how they curb my right to protest.

Etc. Get inventive. Even if you're a rusted on Liberal supporter, there's probably something they're doing you disagree with, and while you probably won't discourage the candidate at all, it might support anyone else who's had a whinge about the same thing.

Can’t the people who espouse all this then, and who want to consume that kind of stuff, start with our own nutters and set a good example?

Support Alan. Support Mark. Support Bronwyn and Pauline. And bring back Malcolm Roberts, the real star of the whole show.
