This may not qualify as 'liking' a webcomic as much as pointing and asking, "Are you OK?", but the creator of Sinfest has gotten, uh, avant-garde lately. http://www.sinfest.net/view.php?date=2018-08-26

It still seems less like "his version of feminism" and more "second-wave feminism, without explaining why he doesn't hold to the more common modern version and possibly without actually having heard of it."

I like how he ties together the themes “other men are zombies who talk all over women” and “self-proclaimed male feminist allies are obnoxious” without a trace of self-reflection.

Rand Brittain posted:It still seems less like "his version of feminism" and more "second-wave feminism, without explaining why he doesn't hold to the more common modern version and possibly without actually having heard of it." I think the violent fantasies of slaughtering his way through the entire political spectrum because, as far as I can tell, porn turns people into mindless zombies who need to be put down, seems like a new elaboration on the theme? Also, yikes. Doubly so, in that it reads like him loudly declaring 'you may all be concerned with political issues that seem more pressing, like far right movements marching in the street, but actually the most important issue is the concept of porn.'

The obsession with pornography is definitely weird, and like most of the other stuff he always seemed to take it as given that porn kills the capacity for empathy, rather than trying to demonstrate it. Although I haven't read his stuff for years so who knows?

I think it's overcorrecting self-atonement for drawing sexy demon girls at the start of the comic's run.

I'd buy that if he drew fewer 'sexy women turned into mindless drones by being in porn' in these strips. The way he literally depicts sex workers as objectified and without any volition is creepy and also sexualized, and sticking a bunch of 'and this is bad' signs up is meaningless.

I think what it mostly comes down to, and what some of the people he's making fun of for demanding "positive portrayals of men" in the last few weeks are asking for*, is that he doesn't really seem to have a picture of what acceptable sexuality looks like. * i am not so naive as to assume that it wasn't 90% CHUDs asking overall

Really dropped the ball on those street signs. No “mansplain lane” or “patriarchy place”? Even “sexism circle” would’ve gotten a chuckle.

I don't know what kind of person still reads Sinfest, or even what kind of person Sinfest is currently targeted at. The comic is weirdly impenetrable. I wonder if it'd do the creator some good to take a break or move onto some other project where he won't be constantly having to deal with his opinions from 18 years ago.

I don't really know who the audience is, either. Honestly, Ishida is almost completely invisible as a web presence, which is very unusual for an artist in 2018, or even 2008.

I think it's definitely lost most of its sincere audience, though. I have not forgotten my mod days on RPGnet, when I changed the title of the relevant thread from "Today's Sinfest Was Awesome" to "Today's Sinfest Was A Thing That Happened", after at least a year of the title being highly ironic to everybody present.

There's two forums now: the original forum, which skewed more intersectional (as far as I could tell) and a new forum Ishida set up with the condition it would specifically focus on radical feminism. (The 'Forum' link at the top of the page still links to the old forum, though.) Both forums are still up, but the original forum has apparently started exporting themselves to a discord in case a delete happens.
