I drove through this "tunnel"/under this "bridge every day for a year while big gently caress-off mine trucks drove over it. https://www.google.com/maps/@52.4488528,-112.1880865,3a,60y,177.74h,89.91t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sb9w8uwoR5gKr361R2f7NJA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 It was simultaneously "what the gently caress am i doing" and "well, it hasn't collapsed yet!" The mine trucks they use there are loving ridiculous as well. https://www.bigdoer.com/16754/old-things/bigfoot-and-brutus-from-afar/

Say Nothing posted:No helmet! If that is, in fact, an interstate highway, then the bicycle isn't allowed on it. Pedestrians, bicycles, other self-powered vehicles, and some lower power engine vehicles(like small scooters, autobikes, crotch rockets, and go karts) are not allowed on interstates for safety reasons. But at that level of pasty white, it's almost as good as a reflective vest

it's US 101 in San Jose, but a lot of interstates don't have any restrictions regardless

Yeah, you can ride your bike on I-90 in south dakota (at least on the shoulder).

The legality varies from area to area. In Oregon for example. you can basically ride freeways anywhere that isn’t a major city. But you’d still be insane to do it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-motorized_access_on_freeways

Oh, you did say "anywhere that isn't a major city." (Already hit reply, too deep to quit now!) There are some highways that specifically say, "Non-motorized vehicles are prohibited," but I guess that's not state-wide. I mean, I guess this is the place where people will ride bikes and/or run from Mount Hood to the coast for no reason other than to say they have...

Mistle posted:If that is, in fact, an interstate highway, then the bicycle isn't allowed on it. thatguy posted:it's US 101 in San Jose, but a lot of interstates don't have any restrictions regardless Well, I guess I learned something new today. I'm used to seeing those "pedestrians, bicycles, etc.. prohibited" signs on every freeway on/off ramp here, but I never considered that outside of the city you might be able to ride a bike on the interstate. That said, this particular stretch of road definitely would not be safe for non-motorized traffic. US-101 is the sort of freeway you could take all the way from Los Angeles to Seattle if you were so inclined (although Interstate 5 is much nicer), and this particular stretch gets heavily congested with commuter traffic during the day. This is also right before the I-280 interchange, another major freeway with heavy daytime and weekend traffic. US-101 and I-280 are also the most common ways to get to San Francisco from this side of the bay. Maybe you could ride your bike down the narrow stretches of 101 through the hills where it's more like a country road, but definitely not here. You could absolutely walk or ride a bike down the surface streets in San Francisco that are designated US-101 because most of the freeway collapsed in '89 and never got rebuilt, and there are bike and pedestrian lanes on the Golden Gate Bridge, which is technically part of US-101. But not here. Google Maps view of US-101 in San Jose vs. Google Maps view of what is technically US-101 in part of San Francisco That being said, pretty much the dopest thing I ever got to do when I was a kid was party on CA-85. There was a stretch of the freeway that was completed in the mid-90s, and several cities hosted street fairs on the freeway before it opened. So yeah, I have ridden a bike down the freeway. Got a soft pretzel too.

This is extremely my poo poo right here, and props to any municipality that charges for the fire department to come out and pull your truck out, when you ignored warnings that said a road was flooded and to take a detour.
