The big thing with Freighters is managing fleets of Frigates who go on missions and collect stuff for you, but there are some issues with that as well so your mileage may vary. Other than that, yeah it is basically more storage, though slightly less convenient because you can't directly access the inventory like you can with storage units (because according NMS logic, interstellar capital ships are less advanced than the simple storage lockers you get the blueprints for early in the game.)

You should get a popup about how it's broken that leads to a couple of nav points where you can spend basic resources to fix it.

Welp, when you jump galaxies, everything in your ship, multitool and exosuit gets broken. Parts, upgrades, everything.

That linked reddit post about frigates was insanely useful. Holy poo poo. So much I had no idea, but especially this which I would have never figured out:quote:Something I didn't see listed: When a ship radios home to let you know that they're damaged, you can tell them to carry-on, then fly to their location and fix them. I didn't even think the frigates actually really 'went' to the system in the mission at all, I figured it was just procgen flavor text. Mind blown.

This game would have been able to hand wave so many things away like your ship always travelling with you if they'd just lifted the digistruct conceit from Borderlands. It would even have been thematically appropriate

Your exosuit has what is basically a giant onboard replicator capable of taking base elements and converting them into prefab structures you can live in. Maybe it can do the same thing with your ship

Yeah the ship being with me breaks immersion but I do recognize that it would suck if I had to buy a new ship in every system....of course a slightly larger portal fixes the problem.

There's also no real reason to do it, right? Like, you don't really gain anything by doing it, outside of maybe an achievement I guess? It's pretty much just a completionist challenge thing right? And I guess a story thing.

Well, you get to choose from some different galaxies, with different map generation parameters. I chose the one with twice as many lush planets.

OK, now I'm confused. Are we talking about the same thing where the story leads to another universe after you finish the main story, or is this "galaxy" business a completely different thing?

You can direct convert tritium (that you mine for free in space) to platinum. It's a terrible low rate but so what, it's free. Any time you're flying around, blast rocks as you move then convert stacks of trit to plat in batches.

Also you can get decent amounts of platinum by mining. Some asteroid fields have crystal-looking asteroids, pretty spiky, and those yield platinum. They might only spawn in certain systems, but keep you eye out and you can get a couple hundred pretty quick. Phase beam also just cuts through asteroids like butter.

Sadly I think you can only oxidate gases and carbon. If you see a mission that rewards iridescite, do that and process it into a shitload of platinum that will keep you covered for a long time.

I've been playing NEXT and having a pretty good time, but I really do wish they just had more QoL to make things less repetitive later on. Just things like having to fly to your frigate to do frigate stuff, or fly back to quest givers (I've stopped taking random quests like that because inevitably I forget and leave them behind on some planet, meh), or fly onto frigates to repair them... just let me repair them from a menu and turn in quests through like an exosuit intercom or something. Not as immersive maybe but christ all that landing and taking off here and there adds up.

Those of you doing heavy farming might want to put some time into getting the biggest harvests you can before the patch drops. The grow times in the new patch a several times longer since they are in real time now. The longest is apparently 48 hours, up from 2 hours. Also, apparently the prices of most crafted items has been adjusted downwards, so sell what you got while you can I guess.

I'm kind of lost with this game. I pretty much just chase Iron, copper, oxygen around and pick up random stuff and sell it. I built a little house, but I don't know what else bases are for. I got an advanced mining laser finally and lost it 20 minutes later when some alien just handed me a new multitool for no reason. I saw the higher materials, but I don't know what they're even for.
