Saudi Arabia can gently caress right off. The sooner the world moves on from oil dependency and these regressive thugs no longer have the clout they wield the better. It won't happen anytime soon but I can dream.

The Saudi pissbaby action is just signalling to other countries - hey, don't question our lovely ways. They don't have anything to lose in doing it to Canada because we're not too heavily in trade etc (armored vehicles notwithstanding).

Rule #1 of submarines: keep water out of the people tube.

Causes some ... problems when it comes to firefighting. Boats/ships in general, really, but on a surface vessel you can hop over the rail when you pump in more water than you can pump out. Kinda surprised submarines don't have Halon systems like server rooms -- evacuate compartment, close door, press big red button, fire goes away, purge compartment with compressed air, Robert's your mother's brother. Or maybe they do and I just haven't seen mention of it.

Interestingly, the Saudi monarchy has not really been hereditary in the sense we're used to. They have traditionally passed the throne to the oldest surviving brother of the monarch, and only to sons once all the brothers are dead. If you think "But that's a ludicrous system that would create an enormous number of perverse incentives!", you wouldn't be wrong.

Here's the specific story, if that helps.

While I'm sure the rationale was to ro shambo Canada so that all the other nations get the message, but it sounds like this crown prince is...not somebody who can handle disagreement, and the whole thing is just a tantrum

And after he set the fire that damaged the sub, he set...a second fire a few weeks later because he wanted to go home :stare:

How the hell do you steal cables from a submarine without someone noticing?

If the plane hits it between engines (wing or people tube) it'd be like the guy in a bar smashing a beer can on his forehead. Hurts a little, but he can shake it off. If the bad guys/lost pilots manage to put an engine through the concrete... to extend the analogy, one time in the early '70s, Pappy Baggins accepted that bet, and watched the guy give himself a concussion with a steel can. The guy paid up when he regained consciousness.

F=MV, Newton will gently caress your poo poo up. A turbofan core moving at .8 Mach will tear through reinforced concrete like [insert metaphor here]

Didn't the investigators find one or two engine cores on rooftops a couple blocks forward of the impact points on 9/12/2001?

Pro tip on crushing a beer can on your head: make sure to squeeze laterally as it impacts to crumple the structural integrity. If you don't do that the sides hold and you are basically hitting yourself with a hammer.

Yeah, that's the trick. I weigh ten stone and can stand on an empty beer can, but any poke to the side makes it collapse.

The old steel beer cans in the Dad anecdote were more like the cans you get veggies in nowadays. The guy that made/lost the bet tried to do the aluminum-can trick with a steel can, was drinking a brand that hadn't switched to the modern material.

Got some contrast for you:

David Pugliese with a very sensible take on the Saudi Hissy fit (IE they are still selling us oil and want to buy their LAVs because they'd be dickpunching themselves otherwise)

"Canada is the World's Worst Oppressor of Women"

Other hot takes the Saudis have include:
  • 75% of all Canadian detainees die before they can stand trial
  • Jordon Petersen is a political prisoner
  • Canada has a large homeless problem (OK, fair)

I'll go you one better.

quote:

Regardless if a new munition were developed for this mission, and the fact that using munitions to fight fires may be extremely effective in certain situations, the concept is simply not scalable or useful in most scenarios. A single B-1 bomber carrying 84 500-pound bombs could tailor its effects to cover an area with shockwaves, but the munitions cost alone would range from $250,000 (unguided) to $2 million (guided) per mission. Perhaps there is another option.

Knowing that both sound waves and shock waves can affect fire, what can produce these but is economically reusable and has none of the side effects of a traditional explosion? Simple: A sonic boom. Any aircraft capable of exceeding the speed of sound (Mach 1) creates a sonic boom along its flight path. While the public mostly associates the event with an audible boom, the pressure differential can easily blow out windows. It’s not a single event either. The sonic boom continues along the flight path of the aircraft, covering approximately one mile of ground per 1,000 feet of altitude.

Armed with this knowledge, the fleet of supersonic U.S. military aircraft provide a variety of altitudes, shapes and sizes that could be used to mission plan an effect over a region engulfed in flames. The permutations are nearly endless. For example, a string of B-1 bombers or fighters flying close and low could put down a large suppressive wave along the front of a fire. Or they could be configured in a wall, at various altitudes, or in a formation creating a wedge or angle effect to shape or vector a fire while awaiting reinforcements on the ground.
