Her relationship with the Shepard is "gently caress you dad" and... that's pretty much it. Yeah, it's kind of creepy. I think she even has an outburst where she's confused why you keep talking to her if you aren't trying to gently caress her?

They tried to do the thing with playing surrogate parent to difficult teenager with Grunt but somehow missed they accidentally did the same thing with Jack. Or this being Bioware having sex with your angsty teen step-daughter might have been a completely intentional choice, who knows.

I always thought that was intentional with Morrigan being one awkward fucker when she tries to be nice in any way. I vaguely recall you could pick an option that ends with something like "yeah OK but please stop speaking like that" and she's like "oh thank god, I have no idea what I'm doing"?

Then again DA:O is one of those Bioware games I haven't even tried replaying and they are always a lot worse than how I remember them.

Aside from some nice improvements in the 2.5D engine department, Duke Nukem 3D is overrated.

The gunplay is terrible. All the guns sound like wet poo poo smacking against a trash can. The fact that autoaim is a necessity means that the guns should be in the center of the screen so that you have a general idea of your shot's trajectory, but they're held off to the side instead. The pain sounds and animations are too short and weak to be satisfying, and occasionally make it difficult to tell if you're hitting anything.

Also, every level that isn't a porno theater or strip joint is boring as hell to look at.

A lot of the dungeons in Xenogears were so boring and the battles so repetitive by the end (spam the same deathblows every fight) that watching a character in a chair narrate instead of instead of dragging through another anima dungeon was a relief.

Not 100% sure how well the first game holds up now, but if you mean the series as whole, yeah. It's the best thing Bioware have ever done other than BG:2. If you like RPGs in general, you'll like it. If you don't like most RPGs it probably won't kindle a new love.

Yeah, I’d say so. The first game is kind of a slog to play through but it probably has the strongest story of all three (even if it is just a rehash of the old Bioware story formula).

The second game is usually considered the best and while it’s starting to show its age a little bit I think that’s true. The main story is a little disjointed, but it mostly revolves around building your squad and winning their loyalty for a big suicide mission, and those individual team-building missions are pretty good. Also the gameplay is way stronger than the first one.

The 3rd one is divisive. The story is a bit all over the place, but there are still some satisfying wrap ups of the various plot threads. The gameplay is the strongest in this one imo.

Start with 1 if you care about the plot. Start with 2 and watch the little recap cinematic if ydgaf.

eventually, yeah, but it had diddly poo poo for years after release, well after mml3 got canceled. I mean the whole Ambassador program was Nintendo goin "whoops sorry for selling you a game machine with no games, our bad", and part of mml3's cancelation was due to the low install base/attach rate of the 3ds

the Vita came out a year later and had a stronger library for a solid couple years before the 3ds really got its footing

I only played the first 2 but I remember them being a lot of fun. It's just ME3 that a lot of people had a problem with, and IIRC that was mostly because of the ending, and some people just don't like Bioware games (not me; Dragon Age Origins and ME2 are simply good games imo)

Very badly. It's in the same mould as Inquisition in that it's like a singleplayer MMO, but worse. It didn't just have comedy face issues, it's hamstrung by a number of things that make it a slog. I couldn't be bothered to go far in it.

Mass Effect 3 is good if you want to see Vancouver get hosed up by an alien invasion.

It's a good game but you can really tell they were rushed since you only get a few squad members and all the cool squad members from 2 are just cameos in individual missions. If you let them die in Mass Effect 2 they get replaced with a generic version of themselves too so you don't miss much.

Yeah, the combat is a bit clunky but it never stood in the way of the game for me. It mostly just gets a bad reputation on account of the later games.

Definitely skip Andromeda. It’s bad and is in no way necessary to complete the story.

It’s pretty bad imo. The setup is forced, the villain is uninteresting and the characters are dull.

The shooty bits are pretty fun though. Give it a whirl if you can for free/ diet cheap. Not worth AAA pricing though

They're ok.

The first one is solid b-grade sci fi with some good moments but fairly terrible gameplay and mechanics, the second is the best and upgrades it into a competent cover shooter with some great missions and character moments including a superb final mission, the third improves the mechanics, and has an even spread of fantastic and terrible bits. They're definitely worth playing.

My unpopular opinion is that me2 planet scanning was fun, as long as you didn't feel compelled to grind it out. Also scanning Uranus lol.

Even the 'best' video game story is complete garbage by conventional literary and screen writing standards.

The problem is actually pretty simple; a good story is all about timing. Foreshadowing, conflict and then the payoff are tightly controlled in movies, television shows and books.

Video games are excellent at vignettes, but an overarching story falls flat when you can't play the whole loving game in one sitting.

I never beat it, and I'm not 100% clear on it's development history, but it feels like a wildly unfinished game. Everything comes across as half baked and unpolished. For example, every single Asari NPC, aside from your teammate, has an identical face. But even the stuff that does seem finished is dull as dishwater. The "story" is a wet fart. Instead of an engaging plot with trying to survive in a new galaxy and learning about these strange new lifeforms, it's just "kill the bad aliens". It's hard to tell if the game was rushed and released before it was finished, or if it's just lazy incompetence. Probably a bit of both.

The actual alien shooting is alright I guess.
