I'm only posting this as a bad example: I wanted to both have the "standing" pose but ALSO that really pretty wiggley formation they do, even though curled up would've been easier, really. I drew and redrew and redrew and sometimes it's just not worth it. I'm also blaming the snake I picked. I mean, there's some really goddamn cute snakes with puppy faces, but I tried to make this cute: EXAMPLE A: THE FACE OF EVIL I tried to soften the features, but there's not that many features on a snek face and the angular and evil parts are what makes it what it is. So bad decisions all around. Today, I did a lot better.

I'm gonna do it I'm gonna use color layers on a black and white painting for once. And I'm gonna use this kickass brushy-rear end brush that I can finally use now that I have Photoshop I'm sure a lot of it was me not knowing how to set up Painter properly and probably doing a bad job at the outset, but I'm loving the feel of Photoshop.

Oh. That's not ideal. I didn't really finish the black and white before going in to try out color, but it might be worth having a normal layer on top to finish out the coloring when I paint like this.

It's the "gurgle" brush for MangaStudio, I hugely overuse it and forgot how I got it. I think it came with a package of 99% really unnecessary brushes and then like two that are super useful. Even "gurgle" is kind of busted in terms of how it works, but I like how it's busted and the effects I can get from it.

How do you guys deal with self doubt and general art crisis? It happens way too often to me that I feel like everything I do is complete trash and I won't ever get to where I want to be, which makes it hard to do anything. Shinmera posted:How do you guys deal with self doubt and general art crisis? Occaisionally I try redrawing something I did when I first started out, so I can see how far I've come. The only downside is that my imagination is a lot stronger now too, so I look at early drawings and they seem horribly uninspired most of the time. Hmm, maybe there's something there, maybe next time I'll just draw something that kid-me would be fucken blown away by... I don't think you'll ever go 'yep, that's it, I'm as good an artist as I want to be, done now', you'll always aim higher than you are currently.

Scoss, you inspired me to practice some landscapes. First one is me taking a stab at the canyon river and then the second is one I did today just farting around being bored. Both took around two hours. The first one I worked in grey-scale and then added colour, the second I began in colour. for myself i have no formal training and very little time for independent study so i have the hugest sense of imposter syndrome thats constantly being reinforced by the fact that everyone i see on the internet who is doing what i do is doing it much better and apparently with less effort i deal with this by having a small group of people i regularly show my stuff to and they seem to be impressed enough that i know im at least not making garbage nobody wants to look at

It's always good to get an ego boost when you're creating as a hobby. Heck, it's nice as a professional too. Sometimes it's needed, especially if you're stuck in a rut or feel like you're not improving, positive reinforcement can help you out of it. Anyhoo, here's something I did today: some sort of steam-punk sniper wielding a pneumatic revolving rifle.

Talking about Art Crisis I tend to be having a very specific one lately. I really struggle with the creative side of art, I feel as though I can draw a portrait from a photograph or person pretty well now. But as soon as I have to imagine something/design something I completely fall apart. Does anyone know any sort of exercises/ways to train creativity in particular?

I don't think that you can really train creativity. You can get better at design, or the process of developing a design or artwork. The biggest thing to break away from is treating the first mark you make as a part of your final product. Start with thumbnails and sketches, if you're intent on drawing a scene (i.e. illustrating people and/or objects in a setting) from scratch, find reference images for what you'll be drawing (even if you think you're intimately familiar with them. Make a bunch of preliminary sketches, in my design and illustration classes we were encouraged to do 30 or more. This is to get the bad (or been-there-done-that) ideas out of the way. For illustrations it helps to draw thumbnails in grey-scale to get a good balance of positive and negative space and composition. Keep your thumbnails loose and quick, try not to spend more than a few minutes on each. If you have something that's really working for you, do a couple more thumbnails just to be sure. Once you have an idea and a rough sketch you can start developing it further, adding in details. Keep utilizing references if you're trying for realism, it's always nice to have a visual reference for specific textures and environments. The common thread between all creative types is a good iterative process, whether it occurs behind the scenes, or stems from repetition. Here's some of my thumbnails and explorations for various school projects, accompanied by the final product (images are big): Fort Calgary Brochure: Notes and preliminary ideas Mood board (aka the feel of the final product I'm going for) Rough sketch Type Treatments Final Comps Article Illustration: Thumbnail brainstorming (the first 10 or so I drew all fell into the bad idea category, either to obscure, convoluted or simplistic) Developed Roughs (thumbnails that I liked that I fleshed out a bit) Final spread with type layout
