Several Goblins posted:I pre-ordered Halloween. Looking forward to that. I'm glad you mentioned Suspiria, because I forgot about that release. Do you know which version I need to grab? A quick Google shows an Italian import for about $35, but was that the only 4k release? Or is the synapse release also 4k mastered? Some of the sites I'm seeing are all from 2017 and are kinda unclear. Yea the Synapse blu ray is the one you want, this one here: https://www.amazon.com/Suspiria-Blu-ray-Jessica-Harper/dp/B07987TFN7/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1534378205&sr=8-1&keywords=Suspiria+blu+ray It's the 4k remaster just without the fancy stuff that came with a limited edition steelbook when it was first released. Pretty sure all the extras on the actual disc are the same though.

This reminded me that there isn't a blu ray or remaster of Dead Alive, which is insanely infuriating considering it's Peter loving Jackson. edit: Did anyone ever get that Friday the 13th blu ray single case collection with that ugly-rear end cover? If it's as good as or better than the 'From Crystal Lake to Manhattan' collection, I want it, but it looks pretty cheap and lazy.

Several Goblins posted:I'm sure this has been asked somewhere in here before, but I didn't see anything. What are some of the best horror Blu-ray or 4k releases, as far as quality and extras go? I just picked up the Shout Factory release of Return of the Living Dead and it's got a ton of stuff to dig into. Almost Blue won this cool edition of Eaten Alive from the May Challenge* that is pretty awesome. If you like The Church, that just got an amazing remaster set out (might have been limited edition). I just bought this copy of Tales from the Hood. Next I'm getting the collector's edition of In The Mouth of Madness. Criterion just put out an awesome Silence of the Lambs. Now's pretty much the best time ever to collect blu ray's for great horror movies. There seems to be a good one every month. *(he was supposed to win a gift subscription to FilmStruck, but that didn't work out because FilmStruck's gifting situation is weird)

It's pretty safe to assume that if it's a Carpenter film released by Shout Factory, it's going to be the definitive version both in terms of the transfer and the extras.

I think I have somehow avoided seeing In The Mouth of Madness all these years, but I've now rectified that. What a good horror film! I love Horror with a capital H. I really like how Sam Neill really seemed to dig playing that role. The very final scene brought a smile to my lips.

Yeah there was a blu-ray that's more expensive now because for whatever reason or another it went out of print a little early. $12 is awesome. Sadly there's never been a truly uncut release of it since it was in theaters/its first VHS release except IIRC an early DVD release in Germany and Spain - even the director's cut is still missing quite a bit of stuff. But there are fortunately some great fan edits that keep it fully intact. drat shame, I'd buy a fully uncut blu-ray in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the recommendations all, time to do some shopping. Starting with that Suspiria remaster. Also, I've actually never seen Eaten Alive, but that edition has a bunch of interesting sounding stuff on it. Is it worth a blind buy? I need to check out that Criterion Silence of the Lambs too. I had the OOP DVD of it from Criterion years ago and it was terrific. I'm a fairly undiscerning horror fan. Whether it's good, campy, shlocky or awful, I tend to still gravitate towards it, with the exception of more "torture porn"-ey movies like most of Eli Roth's catalogue, or the more mean-spirited old video nasties. And I've got a strong affinity for awful horror movies. Several Goblins fucked around with this message at 03:27 on Aug 16, 2018 |

HUNDU THE BEAST GOD posted:Yeah the restoration really really helps here because it's a virtual certainty you'd only ever seen a lovely copy of the movie before. (the PAL version looks godawful for some reason; why are there weird colors everywhere?) A friend had one of those bargain-bin shovelware DVDs and that one was utterly laughable in comparison (everything was blown out, the picture wasn't stable, filled with horrible compression artifacts, etc). A lot of it is probably because Blu-Ray handles grain noise way better than DVD, so everything looks so much sharper because it doesn't end up blurred together. This is super noticeable on something like the '33 King Kong where you can really see waves of differing grain patterns on each stop-motion frame in the Blu-Ray that just isn't there on the DVD. The Criterion NotLD does look way better than I ever expected to see the movie look and I noticed a lot more details in it (for some reason I never caught that Ben is next to the Cemetery Ghoul on the bonfire).

They're ok, best thing is a Combs/Crampton/Gordon commentary track but I think that was already on a DVD from like ten years ago so it's not exclusive to Shout Factory's release. There are a few little featurettes but the real draw is the fantastic transfer on the film itself and then that commentary. Although there is a second commentary track that I haven't listened to yet with one of the writers of the movie.

Crampton understandably says in the commentary that it's her favorite role that she's ever played. Her, Combs, and Gordon are like three of the most friendly people to ever be assembled on one commentary track so it's very endearing. Gordon and Combs go out of their way to praise Crampton's performance in the ending scene, they all really seem to enjoy each other's company.

So, on the topic of obscure films by John Carpenter, is there any consensus or even just experience regarding all his non-horror tv movie stuff? Like, everyone always mentions his Elvis biopic was good, but nobody ever mentions all the other projects where like, he wrote the screenplay and then the tv movie went into obscurity (several westerns for example), or heck, I've never heard word one about his made for tv (written AND directed) teen beach comedy "Zuma Beach"...

I finally filled in this gap in my Carpenter viewing last winter, and it's... weird. Like, Carpenter has said that he had no passion for it because he was just picking up a studio paycheck, and it totally shows. But at the same time, there are still some good, creepy moments in it and once again, no matter the film or role, Mark Hamill refuses to just phone it in. I actually didn't know/remember that he was in it, so I had a momentary flash of "This movie has both Superman AND Luke Skywalker!?" Actually, between this and Invisible Man, it's kind of interesting that actors like Chris Reeves, Hamill, or Chevy Chase went to Carpenter these kind of "I want to break type" roles. I wish it had worked out better in both cases.
