In Living Color was waaaay better. I liked it way more than SNL at the time, too. I hope they try to reboot it again. Glad the previous attempt didn't go through, since it seemed poorly thought out.

I think by nature all sketch shows are hot and miss. I’ve watched all of the major ones and very few bat near or over .500. Usually ones that were short lived. That’s just the nature of sketch comedy in general.

That Mitchell And Webb Look was way more hit than miss... they also had a sketch about sketch comedy shows being hit or miss.

MadTV had a great cast without the time or budget to write a great show.

It's weird that MadTV even existed for so long considering how consistently mediocre it was.

I’m pretty sure it had a steady audience of middle schoolers for its entire run.

The other thing is that comedy is completely subjective, a friend and I could watch the same episode of SNL, agree that about only half the sketches were funny, and the completely disagree about which ones were the funny ones.

A lot of people say that Wiig and Armisen are two of the best SNL cast members of all time but I personally can't stand either, Hader and Moynihan got me through that period. And I have yet to laugh at a single thing Mooney has done since he joined (though the rest of the current cast ranges from amusing to GOAT for me).

I've never sat down and watched That Mitchell and Webb Look but every clip I've seen has been hilarious, I guess maybe I should give it a shot.

I'll admit that Wiig's movie work has been decent and I have watched, and even enjoyed, some of Portlandia. All of their SNL characters are like nails on a frigging chalkboard to me though.

IIRC one of the guys from WKUK eventually quit acting and got a job as a teacher but got fired after someone saw a sketch that got uploaded to Youtube.

Pedos? In England?????

Article about the whole "bad old jokes on Twitter" thing, notable because of what happened to Timmy Williams from WKUK

quote:

Williams achieved what most comedians dream about. After going to school in New York, and producing videos for anyone who would watch them, he got a show on IFC with his sketch group, The Whitest Kids U’ Know.

The Whitest Kids U’ Know ran on IFC from 2007 through 2011, and was a milestone in Williams’ career. He still cherishes the experience to this day — he got to make a TV show. After the series ended, however, Williams went through a messy divorce and decided to move back home to Watertown, South Dakota. A single father, Williams looked for jobs outside the entertainment world, and eventually settled into a career as a substitute teacher. He loved the job, Williams told Polygon, but it ended because of his comedic past.

“I never thought it would become more of problem than having to explain my sketch videos on YouTube every once in a while,” Williams says.

That was until one kid stumbled upon a video that featured Williams dancing in his underwear. Things spiraled from there: Parents discovered the video, and demanded that Williams be fired for his previous work. Williams describes the sketch as pretty inoffensive, but that didn’t matter. A few people thought the material was inappropriate enough to warrant his firing, and the assistant superintendent agreed.

“He said, ‘Well, you know how this town is,’” Williams tells Polygon. “And I said, ‘Yeah, I know how this town is,’” and he cuts me off to say, ‘You know how this town is.’ That was his explanation.”

Williams understands firsthand what it’s like to lose a job over an action in the past, even if his video is nowhere near as provocative as Gunn’s jokes or Harmon’s sketch. Williams says that social media has become increasingly weird for comedians, adding that he’s happy The Whitest Guys U’ Know existed before internet culture changed.

“Those early 2000s were great for weird comedy,” Williams says. “I have to wonder: If we put stuff online again, which we want to do, what’s the response going to be? We’re not going to be that different.”

Honestly I'm shocked it got as many episodes as it did (seven before it was cancelled, though an eighth was shot).
