It's obviously not actually child porn but you are being disingenuous if you can't at least admit that it is a highly sexualized show about highschool students. Just look at the google image search for the show and it takes like 3 images to get to something I would feel uncomfortable having on my computer even if it's legal. Just because you personally don't jerk it to the show doesn't mean there aren't a lot of people who do.

Like, I'm not the smoothest shark in the social ocean, but even I know that there are limits with what you share with people, and I got a feeling this dude had even worse stuff hidden based on some of the stuff he used to talk about. I figured the Kill La Kill stuff was more egregious because he was under the impression that was totally okay to share, and the stuff he scrolled through to bring it up on the computer was "accidental." Also, good rule of thumb: keep your weird porn out of your movie folders if you plan on having guests.

The pro tip though is that you can watch anime and also be a functioning and well-balanced adult who doesn't spout off at people over dinner about some obscure, niche and probably oversexualised anime. Just like you can watch Rick and Morty without being a True Intellectual type.

A lot of it has to do with identity. Too many people define themselves entirely upon the media they consume, resulting in shallow, hyper-defensive, adult children, and as I showed in the post that started this derail, it can leave them stunted in many other ways leading to unhealthy behaviors -- like a fetish for underaged cartoon characters, for example. Again, I'm not saying I'm above it all, but my worst problem is a tendency to view the worst in every situation and to deny myself any sort of joy or positivity, which, let's face it, is completely warranted.

I don't think people can be blamed really, it's a symptom of late capitalism eroding and undermining the real world communities that people participate in and in doing so hollowing out a lot of traditional sources of identity. People are isolated and increasingly are left only with communities formed around the media or products that they consume.

It's not just media. Some people just desperately need *something* to identify with or they can't function. I had a roommate once that told everyone she was a vegan and a lesbian. She wouldn't eat "anything with a face" and bisexual people were lazy/cheating. She'd get drunk and eat chili cheese dogs almost weekly. Still claimed to be vegan. She also had a male friend who she'd sleep with periodically. Literally mentioned that one time rather nonchalantly. She even met a guy that she ended up dating for a bit. Still a lesbian. She took one class at the local university and the day after she got her student aid she had a gently caress load of university gear. You'd think this idiot worked for the school she was so decked out with their logo.
