It would be nice for Star Trek to make another century jump like they did for TNG. Write one in the 25th Century. It gives you freedom to do whatever you want, as well as make an update with technology (seeing as the ol' PADD looks ancient next to today's Kindle). This was obvious to me even as a kid when I thought I was writing the next Star Trek series on lined paper in elementary school. They should also take advantage of the movies and the Abramsverse giving them the flexibility to step away from the Prime universe (which seems to be what STO is running into the ground). Instead, they have decided that Star Trek is really "Spock Trek," and that it's not Trek if there is not an immediate link to Spock.

Reboot kinda worked with having primitive 90s CGI because it was literally about video game characters, which pretty much looked like that (in 3D anyway) at the time.

A few months later, I was bored on a weekend and there wasn't any baseball on so I decided to watch a few episodes, and it's actually really pretty legit. It isn't anywhere near the "What if Family Guy ... but in Star Trek?" abomination that people feared.
