Had a game last week of my Necrons vs. Death Guard that came down to a single point (21-20). I took a bunch of Quantum Shielding units and generally went to town. My buddy learned not to charge a Tesseract Ark, even with Plague Marines. I learned to keep my perfect large adult spider son out of CC, because AP -1 is insufficient. A good time was had by all.

On Thursday evening I played my first game of 40k since I got back in to the hobby, I think the last time I played Dark Eldar were a new army. It was a 500 point match with two objective tokens, bottom of turn two I'd realised that I definitely hadn't brought enough boots to take my opponents objective and secure my own, so it was on to plan b. Table him.

Thousand Sons (me) vs Tau

Turn One
The game opened with a lot of very unexciting advancing and the Tau begin moving to cover and forming their a gun line. With the rest of the Tau in position, their commander drops in and opens up on the Daemon Prince, raining plasma on him, inflicting some minor wounds.

Turn Two
The Rubricae continue their slow trudge up the battlefield and the Tzaangors begin their advance towards the heart of the Tau lines. Gun drones unleash a storm of fire upon the Rubrics, thinning their numbers further.

Enraged, the Daemon Prince takes to the skies, landing next to the Tau commander. Close enough that he can hear the whir of the the alien battle suit he smites the Tau Commander and charges him. Tau technology was no match for the Daemon Prince's claws and he's torn asunder before being able to react.

Turn Three

Rubricae advance and the Soulreaper cannon spins up, it's shots utterly ineffective, undettered the remaining Rubrics level their inferno bolters at the gun drones and remove them from the battlefield. The Tau unleash the full might of their gunline, vaporising Tzaangor after Tzaangor in a devastating hail of laser fire. The Rubricae weather a similar volley from the Fire Warrior Cadre they'd advanced upon, with only some of their number returning to dust.

Turn Four

The Thousand Sons continue their advance towards the Tau gunline, unbroken by the weight of fire and replying in kind with dark psychic powers. Seeing an opening the Daemon Prince dove upon the entrenched Tau, shrugging off overwatch fire to engage them in hand to hand combat, after tearing the Fire Warriors to pieces it turned it's attention upon the Pathfinders. Following their lords example the Tzaangors engaged with another squad, suffering massive loses as they charged in to them. With only three remaining they were locked in combat. Finally close enough to charge, the Rubricae joined their brothers in glorious melee to remove the remaining Tau forces.

This weekend I’ve been doing a painting marathon. Yesterday, I painted essentially nonstop for 14 hours and will continue today until the final White Scars are done.

It’s not a panic paint, I only have 10 guys left but damnit I see the light at the end of the tunnel and am so close to having my first fully painted army in my 20 years of 40k.

There's models out there for the Castellan's guns, but I'm waiting for someone to offer the Valiant's harpoon and conflag cannon so I can swap between them. Although from a few battle reports I've seen them in the Valiant seems to have a hard time getting stuck in early enough to bring all of it's stuff to bear.

I've been going back through the rules and realized that I definitely made a number of mistakes yesterday. Even with that my Deathwatch kill team seems extremely scary.

Easy access to auto-hitting weapons like the downright terrifying frag cannon and the shotgun (which is pretty drat good on a demo specialist) combined with their ability to mess with range bands using special issue ammo means that they're able to consistently hit stuff almost regardless of range. I'm going to have a hard time playing anything else because they just feel so good to use.

I only took one but it managed to kill 1 tac marine and flesh wound another the first time it shot. It is a very scary weapon but I honestly don't think that just taking 4 is the way to win games. You get a lot more flexibilty out of normal bolter dudes with SIA and that can actually matter a lot in Kill Team from what I've seen so far.

What I really want to try are some Deathwatch Reivers. Normal reivers were getting a ton of work done by the people I was playing against and with the addition of SIA they seem downright criminal.

The Valiant is a 12" range model (other than the cannons and missles on top). It also only moves 10". Unless you spend the CP to deep strike it, it generally dies before it makes it into a position to be really effective. Even then, you have a 600pt model that's not on the table for a whole turn.

Kabalites are only armed with the splinter rifle. Kabalite Gunners (you can only have two) can replace their rifle for the special weapons in their box (dark lance, splinter cannon, shredder, blaster). A Sybarite (can only have one) can take either a power sword or agoniser, can take a phantasm grenade launcher and can replace their rifle for either a splinter or blast pistol.

Age of Sigmar witch elves? They would almost work with the masks (as you could trim the ears fairly easy) and if you clip the elf terrain they are jumping from. They don't really blend in with the other dark eldar wytch cult models.

Today I went to my local GW store today to pre-order the upcoming Space Wolves Codex. While there I saw the following photo of a model of a “sinister executioner” your community webpage:

https://whc-cdn.games-workshop.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/WHFestLiveBlog-August18-CawdorExecutioner-3pq-1.jpg

I am extremely disappointed that your company would produce a model like this. The visual imagery of pointed hoods, nooses, and torches has a history of use by racist terrorists here in the States, and in today’s political climate the revival of these groups is a matter of fact. These symbols of evil aren’t relics of an ugly past; they are still present, as shown by last year’s march in Charlottesville.

I understand the dark and grim style of the Warhammer universe. I have been playing your games, building your models, and reading your books since I picked up a copy of Rogue Trader back in the late 80’s. I’ve spent thousands and thousands of dollars on your products over the years. But when I see that you are producing a figure of a faux-Klansman in today’s political climate it makes me reconsider supporting your company.

I am in a mixed-race marriage myself. To me the KKK isn’t a sort of fun-scary thing like a pretend Chaos Marine or Daemon. They are a real threat to my family - my wife and my children - and even indirectly supporting them by producing models which evoke their symbols of hate will make me stop my participation in this hobby.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I also wrote something and sent it to custserv@gwplc.com

quote:

Hello,

Recently I saw on your Community page an image of the new Necromunda model, referenced below:

https://whc-cdn.games-workshop.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/WHFestLiveBlog-August18-CawdorExecutioner-3pq-1.jpg

I've been a fan of your company and its products since 1994. I'm very familiar with the history of your game, including the references in terms of Necromunda Redemptionists and the "grimdark" nature of the 40K universe. While I'm aware that this is not the first time your company has used a capirote on a model, the combination of that distinctive style along with a hangman's noose evokes racist connotations such as the Ku Klux Klan. Within the United States this is extremely controversial. I understand that GW is a UK company and may not have the cultural exposure to see such an image as overtly racist and extremely inappropriate, but the onus falls on you as an international company to have an international perspective. Racial tensions are at an all time high within the United States, and the consequence of spreading a model like this will have both social and business consequences.

From a social consequence, you will be spreading a symbol of hate. You will be propagating the inappropriate attitude that images like this are acceptable, in fact profiting from it. You will be encouraging the perspective that there are circumstances where something evocative of the Ku Klux Klan will be okay to show. You will be associating your company with ignorance, if not outright promoting it.

From a business perspective you run the very real risk of not only alienating a significant portion of the customer base, particularly the black community, but also exposing yourself to a major backlash on social media. Spend a moment imaging how easy it would be for someone to paint that model white, particularly if that happened in a Warhammer store by a staff member, and how difficult it would be for your company to defend it. The negative exposure could easily cost more than the price of retooling.

I implore you; do the right thing and never release that model. Use this as an opportunity to determine how an entire company could have gone from concept to reveal without considering the links to extremely well-known symbols of hatred within one of your largest markets.

Thank you for your time.

Honestly if all GW does is completely forget about the Executioner, never mention it again, and use this as an opportunity to maybe get someone external to look at a model and scream THAT'S RACIST before it gets posted on their official community page then that'll be sufficient.
