I've no idea what the original quote is (and google doesn't turn up anything using that exact phrasing), but that is very definitely what it says. It sounds like the kind of thing you say behind closed doors long enough to internalize it, but is incredibly damning when anyone who's not in your bubble hears it. I attended a local debate a couple years back when a DF member ended up cornered, and she ended up repeatedly comparing trying to maintain your culture in a foreign country to a Brit coming to the mainland and insisting on driving on the left side of the road. She clearly was not used to this being anything less than an instant argument-winner.

It's clearly a reactionary proposal, and the people who made it would probably rather (and still might) have it be so you have to eat a piece of pork during the ceremony. I'm sure the Danes would have done something horrible no matter what, but I'm not sure what to think about the whole handshake thing. Anti-discrimination laws seem awfully arbitrary and non-holistic, and reading the stuff in the European Convention on Human Rights about Freedom of Religion there appears to be not very well defined restrictions upon what cultural norms you can claim exemption from on religious grounds. The job-interview situation described sounds sketchy as gently caress, and clearly the people doing the interviewing were the ones who made it into a full on confrontation instead of just rolling with it, but now that it is in the media and it's being spun as someone demonstrably refusing to shake hands it is being seen as anti-social and the right is milking that sentiment for what it is worth. thotsky fucked around with this message at 20:48 on Aug 19, 2018 |

But my original intent to buckle down and work on Danish citizenship (a 5+ year process) is flickering out as a result. I voted in local elections for the leftists, but the only tolerable parties are basically fringe here as far as I can see.
