Cobbsprite posted:

Tell me about this, and what's the fun way to play it?

It has no weaknesses and is strong at doing everything a DD can do, but the things that make it truly silly are the torps. A standard German DD captain with Adrenaline Rush and Torpedo Armament Expertise is at a base reload time of just over 61 seconds, and it'll come down to <50 with enough damage taken. The torps are fast with good concealment and hit reasonably hard: it's a better torp boat than the Shinonome. Solid German guns mean it's comfortable picking fights with most DDs at its tier, and if you get in over your head just pop smoke and whack your hydro on. You do have to be more cautious with the inevitable T8 uptiering, but only if there are bigger, badder hydro DDs or radar ships on your flank, otherwise you can still be a big bully (though you're definitely not invincible).

The theme of my stupid carrying games has been staying alive into the end game and fully exploiting the absurd torpedo reload. You can also abuse the hydro and smoke more against single threats because you have no fear of being rushed in your smoke - there were plenty times where I was being rushed and looked down to go "oh look, my torps have already reloaded." before surprising the guy with another set, then another, then another etc

In short: play like a German DD when you can, bullying others with hydro and solid guns, and always be exploiting those insane torpedoes because you'll have them back extremely quickly.

North American Turtle Boy Love Association

What a loving weekend. I had two different players try to TK me.

First was an Iowa, on Two Brothers. I was in Worcester, on the west flank in the north, and was shelling people from the little cluster of islands at the tip. Our DD, another CA, and a BB got steamrolled on that side so I had to start falling back. The entire time this Iowa is screaming at me to "kill all the DD that's your job", which, I mean I had used a couple of radar's at that point and chased them along, but there were way too many big guns and not enough other targets around for me to really get out in the open to shoot them. I actually ended up killing a Shima while I was retreating (taking fire while doing so), and I guess the Shima got torps out on the Iowa. He took one, and like literally lost it on me, screaming that because I didn't do my job he took torps. He then shot at me and citadelled me from about 6km away.

Later on, I was my Neptune, and noticed a Yorck/Minsk division I had run into earlier in the night (I had killed them both), a few games back. I was like "fancy running into you guys again, at least we're on the same side now!" and we joked back and forth. It seemed nice and lighthearted. Then the Minsk sailed next to me and unloaded his torps into me. Luckily I think either through the new TK system or through damage saturation, only the first one seemed to do damage to me (and him, so Im guessing saturation). Two other dudes on our side noticed and couldn't believe it either.

loving weekends man.

Each ship section has a hitpoint value. If it gets exceeded shooting that part no longer causes damage. So if let's say you take 5 torps in the nose only the first could do full damage. Also your superstructure can saturate under enough HE spam.

This doesn't affect causing fires/floods and it is an edge case because each section tends to have a lot of hp.

ST. Royal Navy competition, port London and Arsenal

Please note that the information in the Development Blog is preliminary.

Starting with update 0.7.9 there is a new event in the game – “Royal Navy” - which was timed to the release of British destroyers. The event will last for 3 updates untill 0.7.11.

During this competition, each update will have 4 rounds. Each round equals a new week and has 4 stages, each stage has 5 to 7 tasks. There is a corresponding reward, like in-game stuff, Guineas and Sovereigns, for completing a round, stage or task.

You can be doing all tasks simultaneously, however, getting access to the next stage is only possible after completing certain number of tasks in the previous one. There is no limit to how many tasks you can be doing at the same time, unless stated otherwise. All stages are available for completion until the end of the tour.

After completing all stages, access to the Hall of Fame is unlocked, where players compete for being the absolute best.

Update of London port is timed to British destroyers release.

A new temporary category “Royal Navy” and two temporary currencies – Sovereigns and Guineas - are added to the game.

There are two new Royal Navy containers – standard and premium. All that could be found in the containers: signals, consumable camouflages, sovereigns and chance to get one of the British destroyers in early access: Acasta, tier V, Icarus, tier VI, Jervis, tier VII, Lightning, tier VIII.

Sovereigns can be spent on a new camouflage, signals, Bert Dunkirk commander, premium ships Warspite and Gallant, permanent special camouflage for Gallant and standard container Royal Navy.

Players can spend Guineas on a discount for premium destroyer Cossack tier VIII. The amount of discount depends on gaming activity.

“North” and “Ice island” maps, Operation “Dynamo”, Local weather, New game mode

Please note that the information in the Development Blog is preliminary.

In 0.7.9 update some global changes are waiting for maps “North” and “Ice Islands”.

On “North” map islands have been reworked and relocated. Decrease of big islands will allow ships on lines 9 and 10 return to the battle faster. Reworked middle island will bring more dynamic on the map. Height changes of islands will allow to create more firing positions. Moreover, the map became brighter and the sun is in the position to shine to the both teams equally.

The “Ice Islands” map was decreased to 42x42km. This will eliminate situations where ships which are fighting on a flank, won’t be able to join their allies too fast. Replacement of the big islands with the smaller ones, gives a chance to change flanks more rapidly and more options to fire upon more directions. The map has been turned 90 degrees. Starting positions are now on top and bottom of the map.

Operation “Dynamo”
It is time for operation Dynamo to come back, based on the operation of the same name in 1940, where English and French soldiers, surrounded by Germans in Dunkirk, were rescued. Players are going to escort allied transport ships to Duvr using Pa-de-Kale channel, avoiding highly dense mine areas and fighting back enemy aviation and torpedo boats.

English, French, Polish, USSR, and USA destroyers tier VI-VII can be used, as well as premium destroyer Cossack.

Mine field mechanic was changed: the mine displaying has been removed and fields borders are now displayed only on a mini map. When you getting closer to mines a special indicator appears. It shows that your ship is closer to the danger zone. Entering the mine field is accompanied by a special icon that warns about the danger and suggests to leave the zone. If ship has ¼ speed and lower there is no danger. If ship’s speed is higher than 1/4 after some period of time she will receive damage.

All stars for previous operation completion will be reset.

Local weather.

We have tried new mechanics in operation Hermes – «Thunder Storm» - which only effects events happening on certain part of the map. The mechanics was met very warmly, so we decided to try it in Random Battles. Right now «Thunder Storm» is being tested on 3 maps: «North» (Domination), «Land of Fire» (Domination), «Ice Islands» (Epicenter).

Thunder Storm is displayed as a grey circle on the minimap. You will be alarmed via special indicator upon closing and entering the zone of Thunder Storm. While in it, ships become less visible from both sea and sky: destroyers’ visibility -10%, other classes visibility - 20%. Visibility is lowered to 30 km, increased ship visibility after shooting AA decreases and becomes normal after 7 seconds instead of 20, maximum AA spread increases by 1.3 times.
New game mode “Arms Race”

Only tier IX and X ships are allowed, no more than 12 players per team, divisions are allowed as well.

Available on the three maps: Islands of Ice, Mountain Range and Warrior's Path.

Main feature of the mode is that there are special zones on the maps. Each one is timed. After a timer expires, ship that enters said zone receives a bonus. That bonus is active until the battle ends and can be one of three types: visibility modifier, HP restoration and gun or torpedo reload boost. Allies that are as close as 12 km from the zone also receive the bonuses, but twice as low in number as the activating ship.

Battle ends when all of the ships are destroyed or one of the teams earns 1000 points or loses all of their points.

That is hilarious.

Also, just got around to watching your Seattle replays. Good stuff - I think definitely one issue for me is that I learned to play mainly from watching Flambass (and also I played my first 1600 battles exclusively in DDs). So, I tend to be a lot more aggressive. Definitely too aggressive most of the time. Also, I was wondering up until the last minute how the hell you were going to lose that Sleeping Giant match. I think the problem was though the northern side of it was SO much more valuable.

Also in Neptune/Minotaur it's great fun to take advantage of one who gets too comfy - if you lose your BBs in the sea to the north, there is nothing a US Cruiser has to dissuade a face rush (Im sure you know this but I've gunned down quite a few Cleveland/Seattles who sat there just a bit too long).

I cannot help but think this change is a direct result of Wargaming’s decision to over saturate high tier with Radar.

So now that there are roughly 3 1/2 radar cruisers per side at high tier, this spot on the map is a problem that breaks map balance as multiple radar cruisers park there, gently caress poo poo up, and as you say, are very hard to dislodge.

Just take a break, burnout is a thing for any game. If you feel like coming back, I'd exclusively play the boats you are most familiar with, and stop caring what pubbies are doing around you, just aim to do your own best in the game. Sure, losing when you've got a 150k game as bottom tier sucks, but you get to look nice and pretty at the top of the scoreboard at the end and know what you did.

Honestly felt North was decent as-is (and for that matter, are they changing its clone that just has different lighting too?), though the new version seems like it's still okay. The given rationale is eye-rollingly stupid though - if you take a slow ship onto the 9-10 lines on that map, you deserve to be excluded from the battle.

Isn't North incredibly imbalanced to the team spawning north? That island on the west of C works so much better for a US Cruiser on the north side than the south...
