So after a bunch of thinking and experimenting I've decided to devote myself full time to working on my Youtube CG animation channel https://www.youtube.com/user/PaulEdwardMcLaughlin/videos. I am aiming to put out a 1-10 minute video a week so the animation is going to be extremely limited. As for content I've been asking the forums for suggestions on what to do recently, but I think that I want to start doing my own ideas. The prospect of developing an entire catalog of animation that, except for music and sound effects, is entirely my own is motivating. Financially I don't expect to make any money doing this, so I am going to continue to live with my parents indefinitely (they are alright with that). Maybe 10-20 years down the line I'll look for traditional employment, but right now I am comfortable with the negatives that come from creating my own art full time. I'll post the invite here when we get the next date but any london animation goons should come along and watch me get publicly drunk and make a fool of myself with a microphone.

I want to do a ton of background studies, are there any "go to" sites that have screen shot dumps of entire animated shows and movies? A while back I was able to find one that had a lot of early Disney and it was an amazing learning tool. Alternately: any suggestions for taking media I own and turning it into en masse screen shots? I started an animation project and ran into a technical issue that I'm trying to figure out my way around right now. What's the best way to get an animated gif with transparency into a video file with transparency that I can import into, say, Hitfilm Pro or DaVinci Resolve? I've been using Pyxel Edit to create some animations that I now want to use in my project, and spent half the weekend trying to figure out how to get this done. I got to the point that I'm learning the ffmpeg command line interface to try and make my own script that can batch-convert the gifs. I'm aware that I could import the frames as png and re-create the animations in Hitfilm/Resolve, but this isn't scalable for the amount of animations that I'll be working with. I'm also aware that since this is my first project like this, I may be trying to pound a square peg into a round hole and am open to any input on workflow changes that may be necessary. I haven't posted in a while. Here's a big update! I'll start with Duck Party. Thanks for the tip last November about how to adjust music to match your frame rate. Someone from the Audience Awards saw my Love is Love short and asked me to enter their Shorty Shorts competition. I think Typical was one of the judges. I had the bpm at 130 and it needed to be 120. It was fixed for the awards. I lost, but did make it to the finals. This is the same as last time, but just with the adjusted music. I never finalized it or sang the lyrics like planned. http://aud.link/La1DmLz?sh=1535824437qSiS Second thing, Someone else noticed my cartooning and paid me to make a short animation! I'm happy with it, but a BUNCH of animation could have been better. It was a time vs money thing. Also this is only like the 5th short I've ever animated. Just keep that in mind. I'm more of a writer/director person getting into animation to use it as my storytelling medium. It's been a rough journey! The lady that contacted me is from a non profit and wanted to make a PSA. I let her choose the style. She chose my own linework designs; so that made me happy. I got paid to do what I wanted to do. I'm moving up! Also this was shown to the governor of Florida 2 weeks ago to try to convince him to invest in weed removing boats instead of using aquatic pesticides. Good times. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HPY-GHqOmI Alright, and I'm saving the best for last. I've posted my girlfriend's two loops here in the past because she doesn't have an account and I'm proud of her. She wanted to try her hand at cut out animation. So we made a script and she animated it. This is only her 3rd time animating something. Her timing is getting better and better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZNSbi2NSt0

That's awesome! I'm glad my little tip could help! It's funny how once you make something the ball just starts rolling. Never feel down about 'loosing' a competition especially in animation. If you made something good someone notices and that can get you a job and that's a lot better than winning some dumb prize. I've gotten 2 full time studio jobs cause I entered in loopdeloop. The best thing winning got me was a rubber chicken. I want to finish by chanting: One of us! One of us! On of us!

I'm that guy that's just happy to be there. Thanks again! On to the next project. I'll be boarding a whiteboard animation for my gf, boarding out a short scene for loopdeloop (glutton for punishment), and switching our longer project (Bubbletopia) over from Opentoonz to Animate. Next month, I will be sitting down with a couple of people and we are going to build 2 more studio pitches.

Here's my submission for the september loopdeloop. The theme is "Fear". I reused the Alien Tentacle King that I made earlier and added some framework around it to make a little short loop. I drew this in Adobe Animate, made the music in LMMS, the sound in audacity and put it all together with premiere. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPhY_tYCau8

Thanks and goodbye! I've never even looked in cspam. I only check out this thread, gbs and tv at this point. 17 years for me! I think I was a baby 17 years ago... I don't remember clearly! Is there any other place besides Reddit where cool kids go for animation stuff? I'm on a few Facebook groups but I feel a lack of community. On the loop edge, I see there's a Toronto one. That's only 4 hours from me. I doubt I'll go to the October one, but spring time in Toronto would be cool. I might actually be able to see people soak in my photons! (Did it get weird). E: oh yeah, bitmap is there a way to follow your stuffs? I generally don't know who anyone is and I'm not the fan type to track peeps down. I think I follow Duck Party's channel and BAM on YouTube and that's it. Same w everyone else. Since this place is dead feel free to post how to follow you. I only upload to YouTube Zoofer Entertainment that you can find by clicking open the above loop . An Ounce of Gold fucked around with this message at 20:12 on Sep 27, 2018 |

I have an amateur question for everyone. I have an opportunity to make a 1 minute animated short for a local business. I was going to do a hand-drawn animation similar to Terry Gilliam's cartoons. What's the best and/or most affordable program for this? My computer will basically handle any of them. If it helps, most of my animation knowledge comes from Flash Animation, but I haven't worked with that program in years.

# ? Oct 1, 2018 22:28 |

After Effects probably. Pretty easy to translate over your Flash knowledge and there are tons of tutorials online for paper-cutout style animation.

Just fyi I've always been heaps inspired by your work and will be sad to see you go. But I also understand why you're leaving since it took me years to reign in my own internet addiction. So yeah good luck with the whole logging off thing. also here's a thing I made to demo a technique for a friend which made me want to do more frame by frame stuff. I feel like I rely too much on dragging the ease handles way out and calling it a day. Gotta get back to the fundamentals.

An Ounce of Gold posted:Is there any other place besides Reddit where cool kids go for animation stuff? I'm on a few Facebook groups but I feel a lack of community. There are a few good animation podcasts you can listen to to find out who works in animation. I feel like animation takes so much time that most people who do it full time don't have time to do it on the side for personal stuff so the online community is rather vacant most of the time. Other than loopdeloop or 11 second club, The closest thing to an online community is just social media. A lot of people are on instagram or twitter, but it's all mushed togeather with other artists. There's stuff like inktober and other art challenges: character design, colour challenges and whatnot. A lot of storyboard artists post comics and designers post illustrations. Also location plays a big part. If there are animation studios in your area there's more likely to be local animation related events in your area. Obviously LA has a lot...

Hi friends! I came in a little over a month ago asking about animation programs best suited for paper cut-out style animations. Well, I finished it! It's my first animation in around 10 years, it was my first time using Adobe After Effects, and I had a maximum run-time of a minute for everything. The Movie Moth. Every image (besides one) is hand-drawn and painted with watercolors, gouache and India Ink. I hope to do an actual hand-drawn animation next.

There's a few mistakes (esp. the rushed lip sync) but it should give an idea of what we're going for? We've spent about four months on it so far and it's going to be about 11 minutes long.
