Like, what if a bunch of people could make a space ring around a planet

Do walkways built in low orbit follow the curvature of the planet, or continue in a perfectly linear* path forever? Only one way to find out!

*as I have found out to my annoyance, sometimes rooms built of many objects that snap together have parts that aren't quite level with the rest.

Drop a base computer, then click on it again to rename it "Saw an S tool here"

Did the same for a squid ship I saw at a trading post

Just note what system you're in. The multitool in a station will be different than the one you find planetside.

It sounds like there at least used to be a base complexity limit that would prevent you from building any more once you reach it. I'd that still the case? I'm a little surprised I haven't reached it yet.

That's pretty awesome. Here are some ideas for a creative mode base I've been kicking around:

Arecibo Observatory (final fight in James Bond: Goldeneye)

or, any sort of suspended base that has walkways to it from mountains/cliffs

Tiphares/Zalem (city for rich people in Battle Angel Alita)

Space Ring (Battle Angel Alita)

Minas Tirith (I realized after watching ROTK that many of the alien castles in Halo were miniature Minas Tiriths)

Some architecture company's design concept for a cliff house:

That sky house in Oblivion with a clear swimming pool

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU9_wvpOGd4

Too bad you can't put water wherever you want, because in Battle Angel Alita they had an aquarium that was an air sphere for the visitors, surrounded by a water sphere for the fish. The whole thing was glass so it created the illusion that the fish were swimming in space

Next best thing might be to have a giant wall aquarium or even a 4 walled glass aquarium box

What's the view like from inside one of those domes?

Are combat frigates the only ones that will help you in a space battle? I’ve gotten into a few near my fleet and neither the freighter nor frigates do jack (think all I’ve got is explorers and merchants right now).

Only you do damage to enemy ships. Sure the lasers show up but even if an enemy takes 20 in a row they'll still take 0 damage

Thundarr

Would be kind of pointless to bother making them show up if they do literally no damage instead of just a tiny amount of damage. Like a capital freighter in a fight will use it's ships and cannons to light up pirates. You're going to do the vast majority of the damage if you are at all competent but the NPCs actually contribute a little.

Oscar aint no Slouch

In my experience the capital ships' shots do at least some damage, however they need to be aggro'd directly first to start shooting, and they do not lead their shots so they end up missing most everything and are just eye candy.

My combat frigate whappos out like half a second after the last pirate dies and way before the fight music and the alerts stop, which if I'm already pointed at them is a handy way to know to stop trying to kill things.

I think "need" is the wrong word. I ran into a bunch of support frigates so my expedition team is usually 2 specialists, 2 support, and maybe 1 of another unit. I only run a couple at a time so that gives spillover.

Do changes to planets persist across modes? ie - if I started up a creative mode game and somehow found my survival mode/normal mode bases could I potentially build a bunch of stuff that'd still be there when I went back to s/n mode? I'm, uh, curious...

If underwater bases are your thing, Subnautica may be to your liking. It's comparatively less buggy, and has a single, handcrafted world focused on underwater exploration.

I seemed to have stopped getting crafting recipes from manufacturing facilities. I've been to systems for all three races, but I either get nanites or a standing boost or whatever. I'm still missing one or two that I need to make stasis units.

Edit: apparently I'm just crazy unlucky. The fourth attempt at a Vykeen facility gave me a blueprint finally.

In what should be a relatively random and easy solution, the game’s way of handling recipes is a convoluted pain in the rear end. The short of it is that the recipes are tied to a rotation of puzzles that are affected not just by the type of building (manufacturing and ops centers) but also by what race governs the system. Some solutions give out specific rewards and if you somehow miss this you have to go through the entire rotation again. It’s incredibly loving stupid.

Some poor gently caress catalogued this whole clusterfuck here. You can look for the recipe you’re missing and see where to get it.

It's luck, probably. I did nothing special to have an underwater base. Frankly - knowing this game - I'm 100% convinced I'm going to come home one day and find everything flooded.

For anyone looking for base ideas and wants to do more ambitious projects, I recommend looking at other bases for ideas/inspiration. Look up build/design tutorials if that's to your liking. Personally, I just like to find things that look cool and try to do similar things. Also creative mode/practice. That's actually my 3rd full on base, and the first I actually liked. My creative save for playing around with designs and ideas already has 8+ hours.

Also, if you're base building in normal and are using the prefab rooms, good god just buy Pure Ferrite. Rooms take an absurd amount of resources and gently caress mining all that.

Thundarr

Just curious, for that underwater base it looks like you have a tunnel that connects it to land. Did you build that down and into the water first? I've heard that's what keeps them from flooding.

Viperix
Apr 21, 2006
No, actually. I just plopped the first room down about where I thought it should go and went from there. I'd heard that the holo-doors prevent flooding vs the regular doors. But I haven't tested it and doubt it's that simple.

That tunnel to land is where I hide my ugly-rear end storage array.

A not-insignificant chunk of my time spent designing base ideas has been how to deal with those drat things elegantly. Spoilers: it's not easy. They snap to pre-fab corridoors and cuboid rooms(sort-of, that's fucky too depending on what you want to do,) which helps. Why they can't be placed neatly on top of the free-standing parts/platforms is beyond me and extremely annoying.

Edit: Well, that's that then. Either flooded underwater bases is a bug, or not being flooded is a bug, who knows with HG. Either way, it appears I've just gotten lucky then.

You can’t build regular doors underwater, only holo-doors.

Thundarr
Dec 24, 2002

Also, thanks to this thread I realized that you don't need to build storage containers at all since you can always send to them, and can push an extra button in your inventory screen to pull from them while at a base. So you can save yourself a little design headache that way too.

My underwater section is next, I just need a poo poo ton of glass. And for the game to not crash while I'm in the middle of buying materials.

Tiphares under construction. This mountain will serve as the garbage pile under Tiphares. Currently making a 1 wall wide tower as far as it will go, will build the city platform out sideways, build ramps all the way back down to serve as the pipes anchoring Tiphares, then I’ll cut away the tower underneath to create the illusion of it floating, then lastly I’ll remove my Wile E Coyote scaffolding.

Is there an official or unofficial way to let me use my terrain manipulator "indoors"? I'm digging and building an underground base but it's a little finnicky as to when the game lets me use my tool.

The other option is to not actually build anything until the terrain is carved out but that makes it a bit harder to size up my holes and adjust them if they're too small/too big.

edit: another good reason is that the game decided to undo my terrain manipulation and now I have to figure out how to dig my stairwell out

edit 2: this stairwell goes down like 5 staircases worth of levels and now it's filled with regolith :argh:
