though that is kind of a problem for congressmembers that aren't rich cause you've got to maintain a residence in your home district also find housing in DC (not cheap!) even before factoring in travel probably makes it all the more appealing to get bribed this is an even bigger problem in state legislatures where its not uncommon to make like 30k (cause gently caress politicians!!) so you pretty much need a job to get by but it's pretty hard to work a 9-5 being as a politician so everyone ends up lobbyist-adjacent or just be rich to start with and thats who mostly end up winning or retaining seats because of that
