culturally, iq (or abstract "merit") serves as a way for some people to be Objectively Better than others.

rationalists and skeptics tend to overvalue iq (because it's part of their special identity). the worst kinds of liberals consider themselves constitutionally superior to everyone else. racist conservatives with an intellectual bent may also like iq because it shows "nonwhite people are objectively bad!!"

"what intelligence tests miss" is a great book about the scientific understanding of why IQ is actually not super relevant and I'd love for someone to write a book about the cultural dimensions of that question.

The school is poo poo for defending it so long, but it's almost like they wanted the community to tear it down recently, at least since the Durham one came down. We'll see if they press a bunch of charges, but they installed a ton of cameras, then they let these folks spend an hour or whatever rigging the statue to fall behind those banners, while the protesters led a march down the street and back to see it come down, if I'm reading the article correctly. It was a full-on production.

It's a tell for scientific racism. It's no longer quite as culturally acceptable in certain circles to be outright racist, so now certain strains of skeptic use IQ as a way to "prove" that their prejudice is just a fact. It's not convincing for anyone who isn't already racist, but it does provide a veneer of credibility to anyone who really doesn't want to care.

That an IQ test could be biased is, of course, impossible, because they're smart and the IQ test said they're smart, so therefore it must be correct for everyone. Challenging the validity of IQ tests implicitly challenges their own intelligence, because if they can't objectively prove their intelligence to everyone, then no one will think they're smart.

Edit: On the subject of IQ tests, their own inventor rebuked them later in life and said they were worthless and that IQ isn't a real thing, or at least not something that's actually measurable. They persist, almost 100 years later, because they fill some people's deep-seated emotional need to be provably 'superior' to others.

True, although I don't even think any of the town council in Chapel Hill is going to act offended. Maybe a few takes about how dangerous it was, but the community is pretty progressive overall. For the last couple of years the school has practically said they would take it down if they thought they were allowed to, NCs shitstain state legislature passed a law in 2015 to keep any statues from being removed without approval from the State Historical Commission. It's possible Durham would have removed their others as well but I think most of the legal efforts to do so are tied up fighting at the state level.

Hank Hill would be conflicted over whether to vote for Trump because he talks a lotta sense but he's from New York (bwuuuh) so the episode's story would be about him putting himself under increasing suspicion from the secret service trying to shake Trump's hand at a campaign rally to settle the question of whether he votes for him or not.

This all leads into the gross thought experiment I keep coming back to.

Suppose you COULD conclusively prove, using ~science~, that X group is objectively "inferior" to others. Black people, women, gay people, trans people, whatever it might be.

So... that makes it okay to treat them like poo poo?

Why is that a foregone conclusion for these people?

Is it just that it's an ingrained part of their psyche that they yearn so badly to step on someone's face that they'll grasp at whatever excuse they possibly can in order to make it happen?

The 'respectable' ones like Murray don't, they make a big deal about how it shouldn't matter morally. The problem is that if you assume that some groups of people just aren't smart enough to live on their own that means they have to be ruled by someone

yeah, I think the way you're talking about it is as though there is some sort of rational argumentation going on

instead that some people have a deep belief in Hierarchy and that others low enough on the Hierarchy don't deserve any dignity, support, or anything else that we might generally want every human being to have

e: I should fucken read The Authoritarians instead of trying to repeat a summary of its argument that I heard once

Maybe. But I think it's actually pretty adjacent to what a lot of chin-rubbing types do think pretty hard about and try to rationalize.

A cousin of this argument is the "Women should be able to be firefighters" thing. "Yeah no thank you, I don't want to die in my burning house because they made half the firefighters be women who don't have the strength to drag me out"

They frame the argument as a matter of busybodies interfering with common-sense natural order, and close themselves off to arguments that "look, there is such a thing as privilege, and you might *gasp* have to think about life differently if you actually care about people other than yourself"

Sure, the people stomping around waving flags can't be reached. But I think there's a fair number of people who talked themselves into chud-dom via the "raar SJWs" route who can be.

random thought but this statue-bustin' in N.C. probably can't be separated from the quasi-authoritarian measures the GOP government there has taken in the past few years to hold onto power. i believe some researchers have said N.C. is equivalent to an illiberal democracy seen in the developing world. fear of losing grip because of the booming cities and the new socially-liberal class in those cities, and the reaction to that, breeds another reaction.
