Neltharak posted:That's one for bootcha and sunk cost galaxy. Also for the historical drama records. Turns out everything is proceeding according Read the updated post — I just saw another new one. Both read as very plausible. I assume the CitCon crunch is really making a pressure cooker. There are a lot of anecdotal reports of departures of senior talent and elevation of juniors to fill the voids. The newest Glassdoor reviews make it look even more like a five alarm fire. Maybe somebody’s just trolling but it sure looks that way from CIG programming. So many unfamiliar faces, so few true longtimers. If an Operation: Bugout is underway from the top, that should freak the leftovers out. Then again, the community team are having a blast on their Eurovacation so I’m sure everything is fine. https://twitter.com/discolando/status/1031855526873772032

I genuinely feel for the devs. Crunch time is awful enough, but crunch time with no rhyme or reason that will be thrown out by your incompetent managers is soul-crushing. What keeps you going in a project is the sense of accomplishment, the point where you look back on your month of rush and go: "wow, we made something awesome. Rest and get drunk with buddies now". CIG devs never see the fruit of their crunch.

Neltharak posted:I genuinely feel for the devs. Crunch time is awful enough, but crunch time with no rhyme or reason that will be thrown out by your incompetent managers is soul-crushing. It’s miserable. Both these reviews describe the same cultural / managerial problems that the Jennison resignation letter did back in 2015, and that ”Inside the Troubled Development of Star Citizen” did in 2016. The stakes for CitCon 2018 are so unbelievably high. Skipping Gamescom may have spared the Devs from a pre-show crunch yet it’s as easy to believe CIG just opted to start Citcon’s show crunch earlier this time. Unfortunately they have a 3.3 crunch to overcome by CitCon, too. So much of THAT depends on OCS, which may of may not make the cut. But if it doesn’t, then any crunch done on OCS-dependent additions is just like the crunch on the 2016 Squadron vertical slice that got binned at the last minute then glorified in “The Road to CitizenCon.” As you say, soul-crushing indeed.

Hav posted:I barely really touch on the substantive parts of this whole thing, but it was really the last gasp of the Ballmer MS attempt to kill Linux, and it's worth just a read of the wiki page. From 2003 through 2016, although I stopped following the main stream of the case when it became apparent that SCO was seriously fishing. The important result, what killed SCO in their tracks, was the publication of a previously-secret out of court settlement between USL (former AT&T who owned System V Unix) and Regents of California (who were the copyright owners of BSD). The case was brought as a last-ditch attempt to stop BSDs from reaching the consumer market on PCs. USL accused BSD of stealing code from SysV and the result was that actually USL had been wholesale-thieving BSD code without any attribution or payment for years which would have been known to anyone with a SysV source license at the time. In the end USL had to do a lot of rewriting and BSD only a little, but the important code was API-based since there was a lot of BSD merged into the SysV API's. Because SCO relied on those very same API's to make their claims the revealed judgement was effectively precedent. Added to this was the specific case that Novell, the owner of the APIs, had against SCO on licensing grounds, much like Crytek vs CIG/RSI in that the complaint was that SCO was abusing its contractual provisions and SCO kept saying "la la la can't hear you we can do anything because we own Unix" . So: * the APIs were effectively public domain or copy-written under the BSD license which only requires the copyright headers on the source. * the remainder (SysV) were still owned by Novell who did NOT approve the use of its license to SCO in the way they were using it (that part is more complicated and I need to reread it). If you want the guts of this, all the legal stuff is still on http://groklaw.net/, but be warned, it is a very twisty turny thing: * SCO v Novell is worth a deep dive. The decision here began a cascade of decisions, as SCO vs IBM depended on it and that result killed off all the remaining cases (basically SCO suing a bunch of linux companies). You see, the internet never forgets. There is always more and it is always parp

It was always clear to me that Clown Robbers promised too much, but in the first ~2 years the had other people in the team that helped with the illusion that competent people were actually making a game while was the guy for the cameras - I thought those guys could get a modern Freelancer on track with a realistic scope DESPITE of Chris. And Dr Smart making noise wasn't exactly new anyway. But " I spent 8 hours writing this " while trying to paint the reporter as an infernal agent of Derek out to ruin his pet movie project was too much, and I wrote the ticket for my big refund immediately.
