My favorite thing about Doom 4 has to be how they originally tried the soundtrack to have no metal, no rock, no guitar even... and they just couldn't do it.

His GDC talk is great. There's some audio-nerd specific stuff when he gets into how he set up his sound mix and creating the 'instrument' but otherwise it's a fun watch.

Something else I love about Terranigma's presentation is that it portrays the revival of the land in realistic, although still magical and accelerated, terms. Instead of just coming out of the tree and plants are back, you get a cutscene of a single, clearly mystical, dandelion forcing it's way through the barren soil, then the rains come and it grows and takes flower, then the winds blow the petals away and it forms a ball of white seeds that are then carried off and germinate the entire rest of the world. It's a pretty cutscene.

This really isn't a coincidence, many of the original's aliens are based (loosely) on real world supposed alien encounters. The original Floaters I think were inspired a bit by the Flatwoods Monster, and the Mutons by an encounter with supposedly huge green men. The Thin Men continue this, obviously, by being based on the Men In Black. (and a touch of Slenderman)

I think they're just scary bugs that put eggs in you. I don't think Alien was even the first to do that they just did it the best. It's a pretty standard sci fi trope that will never go away because holy gently caress nuggets is that scary.

It bears repeating how excellent the Yakuza 0 localization is. My favorite side story so far has been one where you're buying a kid a porn mag. Throughout the entire thing his name in the UI is innocent lad but the second you give it to him his name changes to sophisticated lad. Also Kiryu tells him not to hide it under his bed because it's not safe and it looks like a man speaking from experience.

That's not all localization, though: that's good (Japanese) writing. And this is speaking as a translator. There's plenty of lovely writing that gets blamed as bad translation, so it's only fair to praise the original writers when the dialogue and story shine. Credit where credit is due! Although yes, the Yakuza series overall has good translation/localization, if I do say so myself. ;)

Something fun with the dungeons in Terranigma is how varied their structure is now that I'm onto the third Restoration Dungeon (which is my term for the dungeons that fix part of the world, so far I've restored Plants and Birds). The 5 towers in the underworld all have unique challenges and gimmicks, with one being rope bridges to balance across, and one teaching you complex jump mechanics, but then the surface dungeons are cool too.

The Tree has it's boss be right at the start, but you cannot enter it's chamber without using a key item elsewhere so you have to explore the entire place to counteract the boss's defenses. The dungeon to restore the birds is a large mountain, so of course you need to get to the top to fight that boss, straightforward but a fun climb. The one I'm currently onto is a sprawling savannah which is more wide than deep, but you have to find these spirits in certain enemies to gather at the shrine to do... something, I haven't beaten that dungeon yet. It's novel.

Just finished Detroit and I can't believe I really enjoyed a David Cage game.

I think what helped was that I purposefully took every single violent and psychopathic action with Markus and Connor as well as trying my absolute best to go against the game's message. I ended up with an ending that 5% of players have seen and a bunch of scenes in the finale that (apparently) "0%" of players have seen. Good times.

Finished Resident Evil Revelations 2 - and the final boss was a really good blend of being super unsettling - and at the same time, pretty hilarious - due to the voice actor for it sounding like they are making baby gaga sounds at a three year old. Though the build up down the final corridors to her is on par with the guy yelling "mayday" from the first revelations.

The end of the 2nd phase is also great, you switch between Claire sniping the Wesker to slow her down as Barry auto-runs to a cave, and then switches to him for a bit and repeats.
After you get enough hits in - Barry's like "I'm done" and tells Claire to use the real gun a rocket launcher that was right next to her the entire time - and that Barry knew about apparently and she just instantly kills it.

And something about that was just really wonderful about how cheesy and pointless drawing that fight out really was.

Ive always appreciated the translation in the Dragon Quest series. It's always full of corny puns and inventive names (DQ7 had some great location names in particular), and every character feels like they have their own voice.

A bit of love to an unreleased game, just because of Polygon doing a video about it: The upcoming Insomniac Spider-Man game gives him a fighting style that includes authentic lucha libre moves. Partly because a brief wrestling career is Spider-Man canon, but it's specifically lucha libre because it's exactly the fighting style that a smaller, quick guy like Spider-Man should be using.

I know nothing about real-world fighting styles, but I love when I occasionally get to hear about how and why characters adopt certain parts of them, especially when it's a character that doesn't really fight 'normally' otherwise.

Yes, that's one series where the translation itself really shines, even from the very beginning, when the text was simpler but still presented in a unique way. The writing is fine and solid and all--the games are still extremely entertaining in Japanese--but the English flourishes are all on the translators, and they do a fantastic job. Those punny names aren't in the originals, but are absolutely in keeping with the spirit of the series. I'd love to work on a DQ title someday, but they have a pretty tight-knit team (and for good reason).

Markus: Successfully led ultraviolent robot revolution including sick as hell action scenes where he demolished a squad of riot cops, CQC'd a whole load of army dudes without sustaining a scratch, successfully liberated the android camp, blew up a tank with a bazooka and got it on with North. Has fully embraced destiny as robot tyrant. Detroit now in android hands, humans fleeing in terror.
Kara: Crossed Canadian border with Alice by sacrificing Luther. Luther held a gun to Alice's head, which I guess caused them not to scan us. Living it large in Canada.
Connor: Psychopathic robot fuckhead who got his kicks from torturing Hank. Cold and unfriendly to everyone he met, never missed a chance to remind Hank that androids are just machines. Drove Hank so crazy he shot him in the head at one point, only to turn up at work the next day looking smug. When the police chief fired Hank and Connor for being screwups Hank quit the force and Connor didn't care about the plot, so headed home to Cyberlife where all Connors were permanently and voluntarily deactivated."

It's not about strength, it's about using leverage and dodging blows from larger opponents with a much longer reach. Being able to hit hard doesn't matter if the guy you're fighting can plant one in your face before you can get close enough to hit him.

His super strength sorta comes and goes by the writer and story. The Sam Raimi Spider-Man doesn't really use it to my knowledge, but the MCU Spider-Man does, sparingly.

And I'm fine with it, because I see his super-strength as more of an equalizing force when poo poo gets wild rather than a core part of his powerset. Something that means he's not just bouncing off of villains that threaten on a global or cosmic level. Bringing in his super strength when fighting thugs on the street corner would totally kill the tension in any fights and the dynamism in his fighting style (as well as probably the street thugs), so it can go ahead and stay home.
