I like that their big recommendation to improve our personal freedoms is to expand legal gambling, like there aren't already five casinos within an hour's drive of everywhere.

What has been the polling in Hunter’s district prior to his arrest? I’ve seen Facebook ads from his opponent suggesting the race might be competitive but the news media seems to assume it’s a given that Hunter will win despite all this.

Eight to ten point lead, so yeah he could still win if the charges don't stick/enough Republicans hold their nose and vote for the felon anyways (many of them will do this).

It's almost as if... the market is rewarding California for its policies? Housing costs are high because a lot of people want to live here? (yes, I know there are lovely regressive reasons for that, too, but I'm trying to think like a spineless libertarian) That can't be right. Why would someone want to live in a place that restricts pollution more than the national minimum?

I don't think anyone here would argue that we don't have a housing crisis, but that's different than the overall economy of the state.

No appointment power there, if Hunter resigned it would just lay vacant until the next election. Also being convicted doesn't automatically remove you from office, so if he were convicted he could be stubborn and refuse to resign, and it would be up to the rest of the House to expel him.

If he gets convicted before the election he'd probably lose, but he could win and be a congressman in jail.

She was driving for Uber.

SM has pretty strict laws against evictions; aside from not paying your rent or other egregious violations of the lease it takes a condo conversion or a sale to a developer (and a correlating tenant buy-out) to get rid of tenants, even if they're on month-to-month leases.

And rent increases are limited by the local rent-control board every year, even for month-to-month tenants.

She said when her building got sold there was a certain vacancy rate stipulated in the sale and to get there, a lot of shady evictions happened.

I'm not going to argue with her on that.

California’s economy is obviously good, but I wouldn’t say it “blows every other state’s out of the water”. A big reason why California’s GDP is so high is because it’s the biggest state in the US by far. If you adjust for population a number of other states have better GDP/capita (those states are also usually freedomless liberal hellholes by CATO standards like MA and NY).

If we go by GDP per capita DC is destroying everyone by about double.

Regardless, Cali is a top 5 world economy.

Median HHI for the us is a bit over $50k, so I’d be surprised if California wasn’t higher. Maybe op is thinking about per capita? That’s probably closer.

Just chiming in to say I absolutely agree we have a horrendous affordable housing crisis that is a huge black mark on it's "progressive" posturing. I was more responding to the insinuation in the report that our pro-labor / anti-employer laws were somehow dragging the state down when in fact they appear to be doing the opposite and making us thrive.

Like the one thing I agreed with in the entire report is them citing NIMBY's preventing coastal development despite rampant demand.

Just let yourself become a worthless person!
A "libertarian" think tank against closed (union) shops is such an obviously contemptible ideology. "We're in favor of contacts organizations agree to freely, unless we don't like what they agree too, then it's hurting economic freedom."

fully 8.8% of the factor is whether or not you are free to not have health insurance or be offered horrible bullshit doesn't-cover-anything plans that the state makes no effort to regulate.

30.4% is just "taxation" with I guess we'll safely assume blanketly lower = more free (to try to survive without services)

5.3% = "rent control is always bad" (freedom to be priced out of your community and have to leave it, including your job, friends, church, whatever, gently caress off you're out for being too poor)

I'm on board with, effectively, "3-strikes and drug laws are bullshit" though.
