Probably the most offensive kind of adaptation is when an original story, well-known for how it deviates from the norm, is hammered into a clichéd narrative that's old by this point. Case in point; Alice in Wonderland which added a chosen-one plot into a story that had no plot, and the Jabberwock as a villain even though he was but a fictional character in the text itself.

Really the worst adaptation is one that seeks to erase the point of the original work, while I believe everything else is expendable: Rick Deckard's sheep, Belle's evil stepsisters, and that hippie-motherfucker Tom Bombadil.

Was that the one where it was revealed that rather than being weird and not understanding humans because she'd been a demon for hundreds of years and was just so far removed from her original humanity that she struggled to return to it, she'd actually always been a weirdo who didn't understand other people? Because that was terrible.

That is a terrible criticism of the Sherlock Holmes stories. It's not a mistake or a failing to not do something you were never trying to do. They're not supposed to be mysteries that the reader can solve.

Also, people who try to connect Moriarty or Addler to everything Holmes related obviously can't stand the fact that the only characters that had at all antagonism towards Sherlock while being on equal footing each appear in only one or two stories out of the enormous amount that Doyle wrote.

They should have gone with the “twist” that Sherlock was the one committing the crimes and that he’d hired an actor to play Moriarty.

The best version of Sherlock Holmes is the one where he teams up with Freud and they fight a team of trained assassin horses. In that one Moriarty is a high-school math teacher that Holmes terrorizes and harasses because he’s coked-up out of his mind and having delusions. Alan Arkin is Freud. It’s great.

A modern remake of Sherlock Holmes requires subversion.

The Sherlock Home: Dr. John Watson is a best-selling and respected criminal psychiatrist working as a profiler for the FBI who does pro bono work for the controversial Sherlock Home for Mental Health. In reality, he's using a few different patients in the institution to pool their unique mental abilities and illnesses to help him solve cases that he takes the credit for.

Dr. Marie Arthur is a social worker who is trying to get the old Sherlock Home shut down and its patients moved into better facilities. She's suspicious of Watson and his interest in the patients, and finds herself trying to prove he's a fraud and a danger.

While not a modern remake, might want to check out Without a Clue, where it's revealed that Doctor Watson, played by Ben Kingsley, is actually the brilliant detective. Reginald Kincaid, played by Michael Caine, was a drunk, out of work actor Watson hired to play the fictional Sherlock once the public demanded to meet the star of his stories.

Several plots involves convoluted situations arising from typos on autocorrect text messages, one has a bug on a fax that induces a suicide. CD roms that tell the future, amazing clear recordings on a 90s PC mic and "hidden" messages from turning the text white in word.

The first episode has Caroline Quentin's character, a journalist, show how to hack someones answering machine by guessing the default pin. A method used by the Sun to hack celebs phones.

It's kinda worth watching for the utter batshit nonsense the show has to get into to keep fresh. One recent episode did a pisstake on Sherlock's style of deducing.

I loved that part. For anyone who hasn’t seen it, the main character is a guy who designs magic tricks for a tv magician and he also solves crimes (usually ‘locked room’ mysteries). In the latest episode he and his wife visit a friend and they say their son is home from university and that he’s a also a bit of an amateur detective. The son shows up and asks them how their trip to Morocco (I think) was. He then goes a minute long Sherlock style spiel about how he deduced they’d been to Morocco based on the main characters watch being a few hours ahead and some other details. As soon as he leaves the room, the main character looks at his watch and just remarks “I’d forgotten the battery died, should probably get a new one.”

Pratchett did it best:

“Samuel Vimes dreamed about Clues. He had a jaundiced view of Clues. He instinctively distrusted them. They got in the way. And he distrusted the kind of person who’d take one look at another man and say in a lordly voice to his companion, “Ah, my dear sir, I can tell you nothing except that he is a left-handed stonemason who has spent some years in the merchant navy and has recently fallen on hard times,” and then unroll a lot of supercilious commentary about calluses and stance and the state of a man’s boots, when exactly the same comments could apply to a man who was wearing his old clothes because he’d been doing a spot of home bricklaying for a new barbecue pit, and had been tattooed once when he was drunk and seventeen* and in fact got seasick on a wet pavement. What arrogance! What an insult to the rich and chaotic variety of the human experience!”

That's one big advantage Elementary has over it.

moriarty is an extremely bad plot device Conan-Doyle pulled out of his rear end to get out of writing Holmes and is normally the worst part of any Sherlock Holmes fanfic
