The thing about conspiracy theorists is while they see themselves as shrewd detectives cutting through all the lies, they're actually the most gullible motherfuckers in the world. That is to say, if you believe in one conspiracy theory, you'll probably believe in any conspiracy theory.

“There has been a [male crisis] for a long, long time. You look at the rates of male suicide and it is enormous and it gets pushed aside. It’s like, ‘You’re only a bloke, you’re only a man, let’s just focus on all of these bad, bad things you are’. There’s a complete double standard. I remember one bloke, a work colleague. He dropped in to my factory around 3 o’clock in the afternoon, chatting away, he seemed 100% all good. The next night he went home and hung himself. I mean, you wouldn’t have picked it. Brilliant bloke. And I was stunned. And, you know, I’m a vegan. I’ve been with Animal Liberation. I used to be on the very first Sea Shepherd committee in Australia. I don’t even get into their groups anymore. I’ve cut myself right out because they are so freakin’ left-wing, walking around with blinkers on their eyes, and you say anything that they don’t agree with and bang!”

quote:

“I think the idea of being a man – of what it means to be a masculine man – is to teach your kids that it’s okay to fight sometimes. To fight for what is right. To punch that bully in the face sometimes, and sometimes fighting is the only answer. I think the idea of being masculine or a man is somehow being tarnished as a bad thing, when I think it’s a very, very good thing. Without masculinity we’re right for the picking for any other hostile culture or group of people that wants to take us over. Men are men, and men should be men. They shouldn’t be feminine. That’s for the women. They can do that. I’m here for men’s rights. I’m ex-military myself, and as you know, there’s been a lot of soldiers coming back from overseas committing suicide. I think over the past decade men have fallen by the wayside.”

"Factors that protect women from suicide are opposite to vulnerability factors in men."

quote:

“That’s a hard question. We often don’t get to voice the issues that are affecting men: high suicides, workplace deaths. I don’t feel like I have any less rights or anything. But it’s more the social issues that aren’t given the same attention. I used to be really left-leaning – hugely, hugely left. I was all about equality, and all of that. And I still am, of course. But it feels like now all of a sudden the left are more concerned with taking away rights. I really do agree with classical, liberal values. Some people are the same as me. I remember doing marches in Perth for marriage equality. Some stayed [on the left], and some realised that it was getting a bit toxic. But it definitely can tear friendships apart. But some issues are more important than friendships, unfortunately.”

You know what, both my parents struggled with mental illness and I grew up with them very active in mental health advocacy, my dad has done the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention fundraising walks for years, and it infuriates me that THIS is the way these people are dealing with men's higher rates of suicide. Or more likely the way they're using those higher suicide rates to justify their own behavior, because I can't imagine how this march is going to help men who are suffering and in danger of committing suicide. I really can't.

I also like how the first guy just had to mention he's a vegan.

Men's rights causes, the ones that are valid, can largely be summed up with stuff there's already strong advocacy groups for that MRAs are unwilling to join because liberal/leftist cooties. Higher death rates at work? Labor movement. Higher rates of suicide? Mental heath advocacy and feminism. "Why does the culture inherently assume I'm a child raping monster who can't be trusted? You should add the gun control movement for suicide. Mass shootings get all the attention in the gun control debate, but suicide with a firearm is a public health crisis no one but public health researchers talk about. Some research suggests that the increase in likelihood of suicide with a firearm in the house increases even after you control for mental health. And the majority of gun owners in the US are white conservative men. But MRAs tend to be pro-gun, whoops, must be feminism's fault.
