John Waters shot and edited his films himself through Female Trouble.

Kubrick was his own DP and editor on both Fear and Desire and Killer's Kiss. He operated a handheld camera for some parts of A Clockwork Orange and was allegedly the main DP for Spartacus, even though Russell Metty was credited.

Josef von Sternberg personally did the lighting on his films and was credited as DP on The Devil is a Woman

John Cassavetes usually operated the handheld camera on his independent films.

PTA was the DOP on Phantom Thread.

In a similar vein, Allen's Manhattan is basically just one big love letter to the city.

The best part about NYC movies in the 70's and 80's is that the writers and directors obviously love their city and think it's the greatest metropolis in the world and they still make it look loving horrifying.

Sammy Davis Jr. Jr. is also in repose.
I think Across 110th Street is a really cool film that goes under the radar. It takes places mainly in Harlem in the early-70s, so you see a lot of the economic depression that was going on then.

I'm surprised stuff like Wild Style, Times Square, Fort Apache The Bronx and The Wiz haven't come up. Wild Style is practically a documentary.

Barry Levinson had a bunch of movies about the city like Diner and Tin Men.

The Shape of Water was set in Balitmore, but that's more about fish loving and we all know true Baltimorians love crabs.

Silence of the Lambs is where I learned Baltimore can be quiet a fun town if you have the right guide.

I was excluding John Waters mentally because I have to be in a certain frame of mind to enjoy his stuff. Very lovely dude, though, one of the nicest I've ever met.

Silence of the Lambs wasn't shot at all in Baltimore, though, so I don't count that. Red Dragon I'll give you, I know they did some shooting in the Sun offices and elsewhere around the western district.
