I remember it being part one of a trilogy, which really made the whole thing even worse. I like this series but we do not need four games of Adam Jenson.

I wasn't able to play MD because my computer is simply not good enough to play it. Areas would take 10+ minutes to load and it played like garbage when it did, so I had to put it down. Got as far as the bit after going into the augmented city, I think. It's definitely a game I want to play eventually, but won't be able to for a while, and it doesn't sound like I missed out on a whole lot story wise.

Worked out well! Hell it might have killed off Deus Ex as a franchise (again)

Squeenix has said DX is getting more games. It may be a while, but hell, it was five years between HR and MD.

I don’t get the novelization stuff though. I play a shitload of videogames and don’t ever pick up the novels. Even Crysis 2’s, which was written by Peter Watts (a respected sci-fi author) based on a game written by Richard Morgan (same) was like “uh, no thanks.”

As usual the dlc is where they really nail poo poo (the real dlc such as the prison, not the missions they obviously cut from the story so they could sell them after).

I've only played a few hours of Deus Ex Mankind Divided, but I think my biggest gripe (and everyone else) is the story. Nothing seems to happen, and from what I read, nothing really gets resolved. It's a drat shame, because the gameplay is totally there. It builds off of the excellent Human Revolution, which just "got" what made the original Deus Ex so great, which is incorporating multiple paths and play-styles to achieve the objectives. You could do non lethal takedowns, hack a security bot and cause mayham, maybe pick a lock to a vent and bypass that room full of armed guards, or just go all in with your typhoon and murder everything, ect. On top of that, Human Revolution had a decent story that tied nicely into the original game in many ways.
It's only downside was a lackluster enemy AI (this is a feature, not a bug of the Deus Ex series at this point) and the lack of environment variety. Having only Lower Hengsha and Detroit as hub-worlds. It was supposed to be much larger, apparently Eidos wanted to show much more of Upper Hengsha, and have Montreal be a hub world.

So with the foundation laid by HR, it makes MK even more disappointing in retrospect. They had 5 years to make that game. They nailed the gameplay, but couldn't get the story? The Deus Ex universe is incredibly rich (http://deusex.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline) , you're telling me they couldn't incorporate the 2030 earthquake and the rise of the NSF? I know they intended to make this a trilogy, but still. Those are some of the major events in the Deus Ex universe, and instead we get to explore one hub world (Prague) and a vague conspiracy around anti and pro aug groups (AUG lives matter? ugggg) and something about a bio weapon..tho to be fair I need to re-play and actually finish the game. It's a shame, fans waited 5 years and deserved much more than what they got.

Anyway..

Back to Revision. I seriously can't get past how good they make Deus Ex and the Unreal 1 engine look. It is colorful, bright, and sharp. Hong Kong in particular is a treat! Here are some screenshots. I had to adjust the gamma though, for some reason they come out looking way darker than in-game

It really doesn't. Starting a story in media res is like the most basic rear end storytelling device in existence and all the relevant information about what you've been doing and why you're where you are is explained by the end of the intro and is also parceled out in a way that only makes sense if the person playing the game doesn't know what's going on.

People letting completionism ruin their enjoyment of games is bad enough but expanding that to include every dumb piece of supplementary tie-in media is even worse.

Like I've never played a game that starts in media res before. Please.

Games that start this way tend to get to the contextualization pretty fast. If this game had started with the Dubai tutorial as in media res, great! That would have worked really well. But then it went on to have several characters show up that the game seemed to sort of assume I was already familiar with, talked about events that had not transpired as though I knew of them, and never properly dealt with either. A bit of it gets explained, mostly by characters going "Uh, Adam, I did this for you before? Duh? Don't you remember?" but for the most part I felt I was left in the dark.

Sure but here's the thing. I get that the internet has commodotised knowledge to an extent but when multiple people in society start using a term as though we always have it's very unsettling. It's like earlier this year when a lot of people in political threads started calling things "nothingburgers" as if that's something we all grew up saying.

I can Google it but I can also ask what the hell happened that I'm the last to be informed we have a new term from media studies that we're all aware of. I guess I like posts where people take the second to mention what they're talking about when they use technical terms.

(Please don't let me become the MrBibs of this thread :ohdear:)

It's not some fancy new term. It was literally first used in Roman times, and I'm pretty sure that that was in reference to Homer's works. It's no more specialized that (say) "closeup" or "cut", or "protagonist". Would you like us to explain our fancy liberal education jargon when we use those words?

"in media res" basically means that you skip the intro and start with the action. "res" means "thing" and "media" means "middle" so it's "in the middle of the thing".

Like, start with a car chase, don't bother to show the setup for it. The audience is expected to be able to follow the story anyway and fill-in-the-blank until a flashback or something.

The main appeal of an in media res start is that you can catch the audience from the beginning with something spectacular and entertaining, and then cover the boring bits of exposition once they're invested in the story.

Castle Clinton is connected to the entrance you use as a trigger. If you exit from the front door the game assumes you just killed everyone.

So enter from any of the secret doors, exit from any secret door for game ti log it as nonlethal.

Same with Pauls last stand- the only way he survives is If you exit through the front door- even If you Kill all the inbound bad guys If you exit through window it logs you as escaping without Paul.

Right, that wasn't the problem with Mankind Divided. The thing that stood out the most of the lack of backstory was there was this woman who Adam is apparently working with and close to but as the player you have no idea who she is or where she comes from. Evidently the novel is about Adam and her meeting and working together. Since it's Deus Ex I obviously did not trust in the slightest this random woman acting like we're best buds.

Somebody really should just demake IW in the original game's engine. Have the installer pull the voice over and maybe the cutscenes from an IW installation and call it a day.

I tried to play IW after a GMDX run a few months ago and I just couldn't get past how floaty everything was and how lovely the engine felt.

This is mistaken. What actually does happen is that the guards in the Castle courtyard are tagged, and the script counts how many of them are alive. If two or more of them get killed by any means, this triggers the "You are not afraid to kill, I am pleased" line from Anna Navarre.

But there's a bug that can trip players who try to play non-lethally: if you pick up and move an unconscious body (to hide it from patrolling guards, for example), that tag gets lost, and that's one fewer courtyard guard alive as far as the script is concerned. So moving just two unconscious bodies is enough to trigger the bloodthirsty rep.

The guards patrolling underground aren't tagged. You can blow them to gibs, and Anna will still berate you for being too gentle.
